What a typical beautiful letter of lost love from the frontline. I am sure many a soldier could relate to this heartfelt plea of hope but final loss of love. It must be a common occurrence to the professional soldier.

A great picture from WW1.. This letter could pretty much sum up what a loving husband would write to his wife, who couldn't wait for hubby to come home to find someone else & these Dear John letters were just so terrible then as now, for soldiers or servicemen to receive & yes, still apply to today's wars, except maybe, your chances of getting killed were far greater in WW1, as this soldier, saw his near future as such or maybe, he was so distraught after the Dear John Letter he received, he just didn't want to live anymore...

This is a well written poem.
Lines flow easily and keeps the reader pushing on to see what lies ahead.
This is free verse of the best kind.
The message in the story is that of memories to live by while on distant land.
The answer to the dear John letter is gentle and yet recriminating in its read.
Unfortunately, this tale rings true as it happens so often to our soldiers.

Sounds like a letter that could be from any war, but I assume this one represents World War 1 because of the picture. You create a deep reminiscing of moments you describe well and in detail. The blow up bed isn't from that era, unless you're writing to represent all wars? Wonderfully composed. Les

This is a very sad piece. I cannot imagine being that calm, in a trench, surrounded by death and waiting for it. I guess love is one thing that come to mind at the end. Well done.

This is a real tear jerkier, the repetition is very nice to read, "I remember ..." and also the Dear John ending.
I read once and I just found it on Wiki that Alex Haley wrote love letters for the sailors when he was in the service and got paid.

This poem is terribly sad. I always wondered how someone could tell another soul goodbye when the receipent of the Dear John letter is lonely and farway and in harm's way. The imagery in your poem is exceptional. Poignant. And such a smoothly flowing read. Blessings, Linda
