Craig, your most erudite offering, mea culpa concerning stanza two (that conceivably could have a negative impact on some persnickety reviewers) notwithstanding, nevertheless, by FS standards, is entitled to a sixer.
G'day,
Don

Thanks so much for the most delightful review, Don; and, of course, for the lovely extra star. I'm most grateful -- Cheers, Craig

Hello again
Another excellent addition to your collection. Francois-Marie was a very interesting man who tried to live a particular kind of life, at great personal risk and, for the greater part, only for the benefit of those who followed. The sad reality, of course, is that what was true then remains true now. The peasants are always found to be revolting.
I have read the forum threads on religion which you contribute to and while I note your energy and intent, I feel that you may as well argue with a stone. There is more evidence to support the existence of Harry Potter than there is to support the existence of 'god' - and if the Internet has taught me anything, it is that no one changes their mind. Ever.
In passing, "derriere" only rhymes with "farce" when spelt with a silent P, as in bath. Perhaps you meant some other word, one which will come to you only with hind sight.
I wish you well
cheers

Not only do I enjoy finding the silent P in bath, I've also discovered mine is a spa, yet there is not a jet in sight. Must be one of these new-fangled gadgets I haven't caught up with yet, like eight-track stereo.
In so far as the religion thread goes, I rarely initiate. I just don't like to see people say silly things and get away with them. But lately, many of the posts have been so far off the planet, I've no clue what they are even about. I guess that's one way to silence the opposition.
Thanks for the fun review.
Comment from Dolly'sPoems
Voltaire, the champion of religious freedom and freedom of speech which did get him into trouble at times. I loved your tribute and it is a pity about that one line that did not rhyme, but it is easily fixed, he stood for what he believed until the end and was not persuaded to hedge his bets at the bitter end just in case. I really enjoyed this write, I love historical poetry, love Dolly x

If only I could think of a word which meant derriere and rhymed with "farce", I'd be set :)
Many thanks for the lovely review, Dolly.

Now you are really trying to impress me. I had forgotten about Pascal's wager and I certainly never knew that Voltaire was that witty on his death bed.
I may forget viaticated, but I won't forget this poem.
By the way. Congratulations on winning the six word poetry contest. I told you that it would win.

Indeed you did predict that, Debbie :) In future, I'll believe you, and only you, when I hear that!
Thanks for the wonderful review,
Craig

I'm impressed that you knew that Voltaire is Arouet! Did you read any of his works in French? As for me, I agree with Pascal - there's nothing to lose in believing especially if God is real as well as Heaven. And though I disagree about making up tales about deathbed conversions, I think the motive is hope to see everyone in Heaven.

Are you saying it hasn't happened, Helen? Or that you think it shouldn't happen?
Sadly, I have not read Voltaire, or anything else in French. My inclination to learn the language was dampened by having to attempt to learn it, Italian, Spanish and German all in the one school year (Year 7). A most stupid approach taken by our school. Thanks for reviewing :)

I think your poem is probably accurate as Voltaire probably never liked the evil things that the powerful Church did. I wish he and others could separate Jesus from the organization of the Church especially when it was a ruling power.
Comment from Pamusart
Hi Craig. You had an anapaestic attack. Is that a valid adjective?
I have heard of Voltaire but never studied about him. Ignoramus I am. I was thinking of John McCain who just died. They moth did it their way. Thank you for sharing

Indeed they did, Pam. And I believe McCain was a man of honour - something rare in his chosen profession. Many thanks :) Craig
