Such a wonderful commemoration, Lisa May. A touching photo and wonderful haiku! Thank you for your write up about veterans in Australia and New Zealand. Very interesting and informative. The allies shaped our world and made it a better place in which to live! My father--still alive--- is a ww2 vet. The poppy is America's symbol for veterans too. Good luck and best wishes. Very moving and poignant. The 'over the top' line is clever, both in its double meaning and its imagery. It's difficult to get so much meaning into so few words but you have managed it splendidly.

I am pleased to see this moving away from a fixation on the 5-7-5 format, embracing instead the 17 syllable maximum and long short long requirements of the form. We are now told in a further move from tradition that the subject matter 'can be anything' -- I do wonder sometimes where all the rule changes come from -- so this seems to fit, though cleverly embracing 'nature' anyway.
The satori line is brilliant with its double meaning that could perhaps anger some veterans were it not for the excellent accompanying historical note.
The seasonal inference is also present in the date that the sacrifice is remembered so even the kigo is maintained.

Sounds like this haiku has some good 's' alliteration in 'signify sacrifice' in line 2. I appreciate the author notes. What a colorful way to honor those who have served in the military. Touching photo, too.

Thanks for explaining the pun at the end - I only knew the one meaning. I'm also very thankful for all the Australian and New Zealand soldiers who secured freedom for South Korea. Thanks for reminding me about ANZAC day. Chrissy710 reminds us yearly.
