I wish you lived in the United States so that you could vote in the upcoming election. This sonnet speaks the truth about how we have been betrayed by our leaders in Congress and the Supreme Court. I know you are from New Zealand yet you have a vested interest in what happens in my country. Please keep writing about how we differ and how we are the same.

Thanks, Jesse. I'll just have to do as best I can from afar on Twitter and facebook and whatever other limited reach to expose the depravity of one side and the great intentions of the other!

You are doing a very good job at showing the farce that is our democracy.
    Keep up the good work!

A poem that is thought-provoking in its sentiments and expression -worth reflecting upon at the moment -well constructed and delivered - thanks for sharing. Wish I had 6 remaining.

This is a fine sonnet in perfect form. You have successfully delivered a brief history of immigration in the US until the arrival of Trump. I think you give him too much credit as this movement started long before his arrival and it will continue long after he is gone.

Just one suggestion here:

Then huddled masses, fled from distant shore, - should have an article before distant, but in order to maintain the sonnet metre it could be written: Then huddled masses from a distant shore,

Wishing you great luck with the voters. You give us much to think about. :)

Thanks Gloria. I believe you are the first reviewer to even mention the name that I so carefully avoided using! And yes, he wasn't the originator, but he did end up being the culmination or at least the supreme figurehead....

I'm going to disagree with you about the need for an article with 'shore.' Not sure of the literary term - synecdoche perhaps.

You're American enough for me, Steve. Our republic is facing the biggest threat since the cannon spat grapes at Fort Sumpter, South Carolina. All because one unlikely bag of fetid wind became the champion of the very people he dispices. Yes, it's time to turn the page.

I hope you and your family are well, Steve.

Peace, Lee

    Many thanks, Lee.

Yes, you have an interesting month (or more) coming up. I'll be watching from afar with my fingers crossed. I believe Harris will win, but what happens after that doesn't reveal itself in my crystal ball. With any luck Trump will have deteriorated mentally to such a point that not even his coattail-tuggers will back off.

Yes, Anne and I are well although both of us have had serious flu bouts. Still no COVID... We enjoyed a great road trip to celebrate our 50th
    How is that book doing?
    Good luck. Keep safe.

I'm so glad you and Anne had a grand road trip. I've never driven cross-country, but lately I've been feeling the tug. At 73? In a 2006 Volvo that already has 280,000 miles on it? Sounds perfect to me. The only issue is, once I drive cross-country, I have to turn around and do it again. But, I've done crazier things.

Sadly, Trump's mental status has no impact on his idiot cult. He could drool and piss himself and those brainless lemmings would blame it on Biden. They dare not speak the name Kamala.

You've definitely got the best bio!

I can drive cross-country in an hour and often do so! Up, down and around-country take a little longer!.

Our trip was in a Honda CRV with 210,000 Km on the clock, but we only added 1,000 Km (700 miles) The plan was more staying still once we reached a destination than moving about!

Trumpism is some sort of phenomenon. I hope to live long enough to see what History makes of it all. I'm picking that Harris wins in November, but what happens after that is the worry. He is already setting the stage for calling the election illegitimate of course.

And the people who follow and believe! I have one interesting response to my poem you reviewed saying simply that Poland has closed her borders (to immigrants) and is the 348th country to do so. No amount of gentle persuasion can convince her that her information may be a little off!

    Keep well!

I'd love to put a few thousand Km on the clock of a rented car in New Zealand. Maybe I will someday.

Trumpism is flagging right now, but should he somehow eke out an Electoral College win, all bets are off.
If he loses, I don't anticipate a major uprising. The roaches will crawl back under the sink and wait for a new Messiah. And one will materialize by 2028. The rift in our country demands beligerance and confrontation. The pessimist inside of me insists nothing short of an attack on our country can pull us back together. How sad is that?

Be grateful you're on the fringes of the maelstrom.

    My, aren't I jolly?

    Peace, Lee

Yeah, we'd be nice to you if you choose to visit. Maybe when "12 Christmas Stories" hits #1?

I don't blame you for the 'jollyness.' The polls remain stubbornly unchanged despite repeated incoherent ramblings from TFG and the time is running out for him to have a meltdown major enough to get his MAGATs to change their allegiance.
I hope you're wrong about the only cure...

Hi Steve,
This is a good poem. It reminds my, sadly, of Donald Trump. I hope that is who you are talking about. I think he should be tried for treason.
Good luck in the contest.
Keep writing and stay healthy.
Have a tremendous week

P S I just published a book called The Interloper and other stories in prose and poetry by Joan Pechter. Maybe we can buy each other's books. Can you tell me how to add a link to my book in my profile?

Hi, Joan. Thanks for this fine review.
Yes, of course it is about him. I will admit to being slightly obsessed and I cannot underscore enough the importance of that election that is one month away. With any justice, Trump will not only lose the election but will be facing a series of serious criminal charges next year.
Good luck with your new book.

Thank you for sharing this Betrayal Poetry Contest entry with us. I enjoyed reading. I think I just saw in the news a few days ago, that Poland has closed its borders to immigration. I think that brings the total to almost 348. Good luck with the contest.

Sorry but I have no idea what you mean with the comment about 348??

    Steve

Countries that have closed their borders to immigration.
reply by the author on 06-Oct-2024
That's what puzzled me, Barbara. There are close to 200 countries in the world. We know that many of them have NOT closed their borders (in the sense that you are talking about) so your number is wildly inaccurate. There is only ONE country that has genuinely closed borders - North Korea.
Perhaps you could explain what you mean exactly by 'closed borders' or point me in the direction of where you found the information about Poland because Googl doesn't show anything about that either.

I'm guessing you are worried about illegal immigration into the US a genuine concern but of course subject to huge amounts of disinformation by those who want to turn it inro a political football.

Conversation.com is where I got my information and with Poland I saw a headline. I guess we get our news from different sources which doesn't surprise me at all.
reply by the author on 06-Oct-2024
OK but you can't suddenly create hundreds more countries in the world than there actually are, so perhaps your information is not to be trusted...
reply by barbara.wilkey on 07-Oct-2024
Here again it depends on who's doing the counting and what criteria they're using for a country. It seems the UN can't even agree.
reply by the author on 07-Oct-2024
Yes, but nobody thinks there are 300+ countries and certainly not 300 countries that have closed their borders to immigrants!
    Let's leave it at that.

    Have a good day.

This is a great entry for the Betrayal Poetry competition. In reading these entries, it's interesting to see how the "same" betrayal is portrayed from both sides. I admire your challenge to voice this betrayal while not being an American and think you have done an admirable job of it. I also like the inclusion of Lazarus' poem in your Author Notes. I remember singing her words in a choir song by Irving Berlin when I was in school. Nicely done!

Thanks for this review. I am one of those who hope and believe that this particular betrayal will arouse the wrath of the American people when they vote over the next month.

The whole story of the Statue of Liberty and how Lazarus' poem was chosen is fascinating.

A well written, rhymed and metered sonnet Steve, America is in trouble just now and no one wants the top job and so they are down to a couple of dodgy personalities to choose from. I always base my vote on party policy rather than personalities, but I know that personalities are important to the Americans, I enjoyed your powerful post Steve, love Dolly x x x

Hi, Dolly. Thanks for the review.

I'm not sure what you've been smoking but it must be good. When the 'personality' of one candidate is to be a convicted felon and an adjudicated rapist as well as one who has suggested terminating the constitution, then maybe, just maybe, that personality has to be taken into consideration.
With any luck at all you will be proven wrong about Harris next year and the criminal will end up rotting in a jail cell somewhere.

This is a wonderful poem that gives the reader much to think about. "Betrayed our nation, tore convention down" is a powerful use of words that shows the importance of the need of a good leader. Excellent use of words and a smooth poetic flow of lines.
