deepwater,
Oh yes, each generation looks back and sees their failings and hopes the next generation to follow will not walk in those same footsteps...praying that they will do as I say, not as I do...but in the end...only they know what path they will follow.

An excellent writing on this poem about children. The picture chosen goes with this very well. Is it a personal picture? Yes, they have to learn and try not to screw things up that we have.

Comment from Margaret Snowdon
This is such a philosophical
piece, Gary - we do indeed
make many mistakes in life,
and hope that our children
don't make the same ones...
but then, they have to learn
by their own mistakes which
helps them grow in character.
A great piece of free verse, my friend.

This poem carries such a deeply felt lesson to us all, Gary.
The trouble is that every single generation REFUSES to study and learn from the mistakes of their predecessors. That's why we end up on the cyclic repeat track! Pat.

I really like this poem.
I especially like these lines:
'With age,
What's left but the children?
Their hopes, dreams and welfare,'
But I am not sure what you mean by this line:
'Governments revert...... lesson.'
'Watch your children play.
Leave them to study history,
We continue to make the same mistakes,
Learn from evolution.'
This is so true - why don't we learn from history - each generation seems to make the same mistakes as the previous ones - why is it that we think we know everything when we are young - and don't listen to those with more experience. I think each generation needs to listen to each other and learn...
A good poem and some really interesting thoughts.

Your poem is certainly one to make people think. Yes, our children have the future of this planet in their hands. Let's hope they make a better job of it without having their integrity tarnished. In the meantime it takes skill as a parent to ensure their innocence isn't stolen by outside influences.

Just a couple of nits here, no biggie.
Governments revert[......] lesson. Ellipses consist of 3 dots, with a space before & after :
Governments revert ... lesson.
Let the children play[....] And watch. - Let the children play ... And watch.
This was a wonderful poem, Deepwater. As billions of babyboomers age and die, the world is left to the child to sort out the mess we left behind. the children truly are our future. Well done.
