Oh Gary, this is so sad. Life and love - especially love can be so cruel. You capture the scene very well in this free verse. The memories of home and of his children a constant touch-stone in the isolated world of war.
The pain of the soldier, and the lash of his words are sweet revenge, but horrid in their intent. Folks do it all the time, but I find it so sad that anyone would give up their life for someone that no longer loved them.
The build up of the thoughts in the letter work really well.

I loved this response to his letter, remembering all the good times and not sinking into bitterness and recriminations, i liked how at the end he allowed his broken heart to show, a great poem ,

What a beautifully poignant response to a Dear John letter. Well written and I like how the response is not angry but filled with good memories shared from a broken heart. You've summed up what too many of our dear mean in uniform have been thru, and the picture gives it a timeless feeling. Nicely done.

A very touching letter. I enjoyed reading it from beginning to end. Very strong and powerful. It ran smoothly and the images are vivid, varied and strong. But if there is anything that me hard, it is the last part which says: "But now only to find your soul travels with another...this letter brings for me death this day." Very poignant. I recommend sending this letter to a magazine regarding soldiers at war.

This was good. Well written. I'm in the Navy though and I'm not quite sure that this is how that return letter would sound. A few more expletive remarks I would think. Thanks for sharing.

The sadness you portray in this well written poem, is what I believe has happened to many of our young men, such a terrible letter to have received...bad enough you were in a foreign land fighting to protect your wife and children, then to have all your memories be the only thing you have left...
Hold on to your memories...they may be all you have for now...but not for the future...there's going to be someone for you once again

Hi deepwater..Moving and morbid. A soldier has nothing, but memories to keep him warm. Hate those dear John letters because they hit to the core. Your work does great to hit the reality of war. "Whatever the army issued," that's my favorite line..Take care!
