An old-fashioned clock is very soothing to listen to. It is also nice to consider its intricate working parts that create the phenomenon of keeping time. Lovely clock in the picture. Well chosen words that capture the essence of the workings of a clock well. Faye

I loved your nicely designed poem, Tony, there's nothing more relentless than time, and particularly when you are stationed within the confines of being reminded by the incessant loud ticking of the clock, great little work here Tony, well done, blessings, Roy.

I like your free verse style and how you use line breaks and spacing to sculpt the phrasing and pauses. Well done. A keen sense of flow and music and dramatic effect. Excellent musicality in the phonetics as well...especially the alliteration and consonance of S in first stanza and consonance of C as well...sound super read aloud:
Slow and stately ticks the clock
seconds breaking stillness
with pendulous monotony
It has a rhythm like a clock...and so do the next lines:
to and fro
they go
into a haze of bygone days
and dust
suspended in the moonlight.
Nice internal rhyme of haze and days and rhyme of for and go...well timed, s they sound like second beating. Creative image--dust suspended in moonlight...super!
Love the playfulness here (and the assonance and alliteration):
The lunar toc of the clock
drips time, drop by drop
Ere the cuckoo calls
outstanding closing note...
to cut the thread
that binds us
to the metronomic madness
of the clock.
Great picture, too. Bravo
Loved this.
Warmly, rd

Good alliteration, Tony, for a sound technical write.
A mechanical write that leaves the imprint of time within the minds eye.
Time is probably the entity we fear most, yet when young we think it slow.
Good write.
Best wishes,
RG

This poem is lovely. It brought back memories of my youth when I'd sit and watch my great-aunt's grandfather clock. I thought it was so beautiful. Thanks for sharing.

Yes, being on the clock can be tedious, depressing, maddening, and so forth. It can be the proverbial Catch-22...we need to track time in order to manage our lives, yet doing so is very often stressful! We can't live with the Clock, can't do without it.
Peace!
Mike

Hi Tony - A good free verse that had me moving my head from side to side as I read it. Good use of metaphor in your 4th stanza - 'the clock dripping time'. Good alliteration in metronomic madness. They can get on your nerves - we have a grandfather clock that my husband turned off, couldn't stand the tick-tocking and the every quarter chimes. A good poem and I like the picture - does the head move slowly over as time passes? Warm regards Dorothy x

This is touching. Is it because it hits us with the facts of life. I mean the clock facing us with the day that we will be dust. the (metronomic) madness of the clock - what a word and description of a systematic madness. it`s madness because (what`s the point of time?). The lunar toc of the clock drips time, drop by drop / seconds breaking stillness with pendulous monotony. Wow, how short and touching. Thanks.

Ho, hum. Yawn, yawn. Sorry your poem makes me drowsy, lol. You did a good job capturing the monotony of the ticking clock. Good job with the pace - it reads slowly as it's supposed to. Hugs, Lou
