An excellent tribute to those (and I am betting you are among them)who served our country well. You show clearly why some choose to serve, and how it is the brotherhood of soldiers who defend each other, and those of us at home. Thanks for adding meaning to the recent Memorial Day holiday. D

I truly believe this as well. Being a soldier is something that's hard to get out of you system. My father still makes sure to tuck his corners when he makes up a bed and he'll be 63 this year. Good Job.

Fantastic poem from the POV of a soldier. Brothers in Arms is an old saying, but so true amongst those who have served or are still serving.
Poem has good free verse, with a lovely and strong, yet sad message.
Warmest Regards,
Marijke

This is the second poem of yours that I have read and enjoy. I'm thinking of going back to the beginning and reviewing the entire book.

my brother... I always enjoy how you put things....
And in this case, as with most of your writing, you had to go through it.... so the insight of how you feel is very appreciated....(knowing we will always go a little further than requested)(brothers in arms) God bless you for that!

I do disagree with this. I am well away of the saying, "Old soldiers never die, they simply fade away." In a sense, I can see how a person can feel this. But what an old soldier represents and stands for, remains well in the hearts and minds of the people they talk to. Especially young children. Then as they get older, the remember what those old soldiers tell them and see how it applies to them. Even after a particular soldier passes on, God can always view the fruits of their labors.
I truly enjoy this well written, as it instantly reminded me of the above point. In fact, when things get hard and feel there isn't much more to give to a situation, the old soldiers point the way. That way, an old soldier never dies. Great job and sentiment with this one! Mike

Hi GW,
How right you are. Those who never went to war or those who had a loved one that did may not understand how precious our freedom really is. Soldiers sacrifice every thing to keep our country free and my heart aches for those who lost their lives. An excellent poem. chey

Bravo. Your writing is so true. Most men would agree with your words that they would cross "heaven and earth to defend our families and country."
So many have proven this over the years. Your illustration is great. More people should have this sentiment. - Thesis

Very nice poem and full of meaning. You tell your story so well in few words. Your writing does not feel forced. You did a very good job.
