Some brilliant images and metaphors in your "cold" free verse prompt. You've also used internal rhymes that pace the rhythm to build to a crescendo, and then back to the kitchen where it's warm and stocked with good food.
A most enjoyable read today, J. :)

Comment from Ben Colder
After reading this, I got up and turned up my heat. Put on a sweater and thinking about going outside but it is 70 degrees out there.
Wow. A good job poet.

You detail in great free verse,
The many reasons why a Texan must never
Travel north of Dallas after December 1
We know ice here in Texas
We use it to chill beer
We blend it with lime juice and Tequila to make Margaritas
We use it to keep food fresh should our fridge fail
Other than these things, I know not of what you write
And I am extremely happy in my ignorance.

Reese, now that spicy drink it just the ticket, I am certain.
Comment from Ben B.
I hate the cold too. I'm not a big a fan of it and you pretty much narrowed down the feelings right there. I don't see how a bowl of chili hopes though. All that does for me is burn my tongue.

Ben to bad about that bowl of spicy chili, perhaps a "current" bush and electric blanket would be in order.
Comment from Waterfowl
You went the extra mile describing a freezing winter day with the senses of sight, touch, and sound.
Winter landscapes are beautiful so long as they're maintained with freezing temperatures. Once it warms up, things turn into a slushy mess.
And may a bunch of snow be dumped into your pants for making me crave chili during work! It's way tastier than my lunch!

Hi there, that sounds cold indeed. Too much cold for my liking if truth be told. It's a great entry for the free verse challenge and I think you've written a fine poem. Ulla:)))

You have a vivid use of words that appeals to the senses, the reader can feel the cold. Spicy chili and long johns are definately for the cold winter season. Excellent use of words and poetic form. Stay warm.

Reading this lovely poem made me freeze.!:) The words flow freely. Don't freeze! Fine rhyme! Arctic is wild and hauntingly beautiful created by God! How can a humble mortal man conquer it? Thanks for sharing!

I got cold just reading this! I don't like it that cold, I do like it to feel like winter, a least for a few days. That's what we have in FL a few days of winter. Last night was our coldest temp, there was even frost on windshields. Well done is describing cold. I need a hot cocoa now. =]
