Congrats on your prize for this stunning piece. Fine form for a flash--brilliant twist.
Sugg: I believe you mean "prone" (vs "supine" means he's lying on his back)

Easy to see why this did so well in the Flash Fiction competition. Sadly it is truth. How I wish people would educate themselves about the animal kingdom. I am an activist for both animals and children.

Hello Jean, Thanks for reading and second place blew me away! We have a duty to care for all God's creatures. I prefer animals to people sometimes. Blessings, Kay.

This is a well written terse story about how a lioness hunts. She seems old and slow if she missed a baby zebra. The miss was an omen of her coming death.
Congrats on placing second in the contest
Keep writing and stay healthy

A fabulous flash fiction Aussie, and you really do put us right there with this old lioness, waiting in the grass for her prey. Well done and congrats on the placing in the contest, great write.

Great job with your flash fiction. You show us the life of huntress lion is on a precarious balance. You even foreshadowed the possibility of her own death as she has to kill to live. And you left us hanging with just the artistic "a single shot rang out" and leave the reader to fill in the rest.
Congratulations on the 2nd place win!!

Wow! Thanks so much for your in depth review and so pleased you enjoyed. Lions have it hard but it was her time to pass over to the rainbow bridge and hunt no more. Second place blew me out of the water! Bless you, Kay XX

Oh, what a good, descriptive narrative! I can picture her, tense, alert- ready for the kill. Poachers are a terrible scourge. What a sad ending, but it makes a good story. You show the goal, the moments leading up to her reaching it, and the final and unsettling results. Muy bueno, Ms. Aussie!
We are having a lovely Spring, here. Am slowly beginning the replacement of all my dead plants I'd had for years before our unusual severe freeze. I love getting my hands in the dirt.
Hope you are all right.
Enjoyed your story. Congrats on being recognized!
Best,
Katharine

Not only recognised, I won second place with it! Yahoo! Yes, I love getting in to earth and plant out little ones - such a joy that god has given us and man can't corrupt. Your weather has been severe and in a way, ours is nuts. Severe drought and high temps. Autumn and you would think it was still summer! At least now the rains have arrived and last weekend I got 100 mm a big difference to 1 mm since January. A lot of our crops are rotting because we can't get overseas pickers because of covid. The schoolkids came up with a bright idea, they got stuck into picking what they could. Blessings my friend, love Kay XX :-)

glad you got rain and good for the school kids. AND you're right about planting and working with the soil is one thing man can't corrupt - about the only thing. At the moment our gov't is about as corrupt as you can get and socialism is creeping in. I can hardly stand to watch the news, it makes me so depressed. But, enough of that.
I'm having fun entering FS contests and writing short stories and trying new recipes. Made some spinach soup yesterday that turned out pretty good. surprise surprise. Going to make some corn bread and have a couple of friends to supper. Now that I've bored you to tears, I will say adios - however, I did love hearing from you!

I can't imagine spinach soup? I love spinach. We have the English version and then we have the giant Ford hook spinach. It used to be a staple back in the old days, now it costs $5 a bunch! I planted some in my tubs, lost it because it is so big the roots ran out of soil! Pouring rain here, much needed. Love, Kay.

soup has chicken stock, shredded onion and carrots, spinach. LOTS of cream, nutmeg and lemon zest of one lemon- tasty Had to take the stems off of 2 bags of spinach. :)
-
Yummy Mummy. I like the stems the best.

laughing. will send them to you.

This was a great, well writtenflash fiction story. I especially liked the point of view of the lioness. Very vivid imagery. But, might I add, poachers suck. Hugs and blessings to you.

The hunter becomes the hunted and victim of the poacher's rifle. As I understand, most of the killing by lions is carried out by the lionesses, but the lion gets first go at the kill. Injustice it seems is not confined to the human world.

All is clearly as it should be in leonineland. Lol.

I loved your beginning description of what the lioness sees. I cringed when I knew she was going to die. I hate that this happens all too much.
Good luck in the contest!

This is very good flash fiction, which may in some cases be more like non-fiction, unfortunately. Your surprise ending was stark. The reader would be helped with a paragraph line space where the two run together.
