This is such a touching, heartbreaking flash fiction piece. I really like how well it flows. The picture you chose is perfect as well. Very nicely done.

Thank you so much for your six stars and for your thoughtful comments. I wish people would just allow the elephants to live their lives. Such amazing animals. Hugs.

This is a sad story about true love and dying of a broken heart. I like the twist at the end that it was elephants and not people.
Keep writing and stay healthy.
Congrats on placing second in the contest.

Congrats on your second place win for this. I love elephants so much, and truly believe a mother could die from heartbreak. They are such emotional, social, intelligent creatures.
I don't know if you ever got the chance to check out my short story post for "Akashinga: The Brave Ones," but it's about the all-female wildlife ranger group in Zimbabwe that protect elephants from poachers. You might enjoy it. It's only about 300 words, I think...

Yes, I voted for it in the contest. :-) I totally remember it. It was about the women who were laying down in the grass? Thank you so much for your review and comments. It is much appreciated. I love elephants too. My son from a very young age, has been infatuated with them, and I learned a lot since he was born. We even went to a sanctuary in San Andreas, California four his 18th birthday. Thanks again. Hugs.

How devastating and heartbreaking. The story is very well done and shows that animals too have emotions and love and family bonds. Congratulations on winning the second place ribbon for your story. Smiles, Carol

Of course, you should be! It's a tough crowd out there...every one is good and it's just what touches the right heart strings at the right time. Smiles, Carol

You have imparted some knowledge that many of us possibly hadn't heard about before. It seems elephants are far more empathetic to our family and friends than many humans. You've expressed this beautifully. Good luck in the contest.

What a beautiful heart-rending story. You have excellent writing skills, that pulled this reader in. It is a sad state for these elegant giants. I wonder if we'll be able to protect then before they're all gone.
I think you'll do very well in the contest. Best of luck.

Very well written and kept me in suspense until the last paragraph, which was a surprise. Thank you for sharing the notes about the bond of friendship among the elephants.

Thank you, Patricia, for your comments and review. Yes, I have heard, more than once, of people who have died from what others believe to have been a broken heart. In both the human species and the elephant species, their broken hearts bring me sadness for them. Thanks again. Hugs.

This makes me sad all over again. I saw a fb video of a similar scenario you are describing. What you described is heartbreaking. You are accurate in your account. They do gather round the deceased. Humans think they are superior to animals. They are not. This is a poignant tribute to the animal kingdom. Thank you.
