No wonder you are so tough, Aussie. You have seen tough, wallowed in it yourself, and gone right on living with a positive attitude. You understand life and how bad it can be.
You tell your workshop story well. It breaks my heart that those angels had such short lives. You gave them good days though, and they gave you wonderful memories.
Thank you for sharing your life with us.

Hello Debbie, Thanks for reading, glad you enjoyed. Best job I ever had (if you could call it work) I loved those young people and was grateful for the precious time with them. Downs syndrome are not long livers because of heart problems. Love, Kace XX

I enjoyed reading your story. I also have worked with developmentally delayed people throughout my lifetime. My aunt was nine years older than me, and growing up, she and I spent a lot of time together. While I matured, her mental age stayed at around four years old. We were very close. She too, was an angel! she died almost 15 years ago from pancreatic cancer. I miss her so much.

Thank you for sharing your story. Hugs and blessings to you.

Thank you my bestest friend. Yes, all the 'kids' came to visit in the hospital. It was funny. One girl was a Catholic and she got down on the floor (touching her head) crossed herself and asked for the Pope's blessing! It's very cold here -2C this a.m. I went out for a day at the markets and the seafront. Much love you. K XX

I'm so glad they came to see you...
so they knew something had happened...
those children would have been crushed
with you not coming back...and not knowing why...that is so sweet what that little
    girl did...

and it's in the 90's today...

so glad you got out to shop a bit...
and got to see the seafront...you have to get out once in a while...

and you are so welcome my besterest friend...sending much love your way...xxoo

I liked this. It was a good read. At the end, you (your character) lost a leg - that day you became an angel too. Not that you weren't already one to someone - somewhere.

A lovely thing...and it reflects the person you are. I always read something different from you all the time, and you always brighten the horizon.
The fact that you have spent your life in such roles speak highly of you...and then, even through tragedy, you kept a brave face, and still find pleasure in humbleness.
Good luck with this.
My best wishes.
RG

You did a terrific job of this true story, K. Your love and sense of humour for your charges comes through brilliantly, and by the sounds of it they knew you to be good humoured enough to try to pull on over on you.

Just a couple of nits:

Chris was determined to give them goals and the the young people quality time: apart, from counting screws and eating junk food.

hen there was Richard who was a Downe's (Down's) Syndrome,

Wishing you great luck with the Contest Committee. :)

Gloria

Aw, thank you so much my friend. It was the best job I ever had. Wouldn't call it work. So sad when Joey (27) passed away. Everyone who walks through your life leaves footprints, in my case, joy. Blessings, Kay XX

What a hero you are not only did you help all these young physically and mentally impaired young people, but you faced a life changing battle in your own life, I have nothing but admiration for you. Just because people are disabled in some way they still deserve to live good lives and enjoy life to the full, much enjoyed, love Dolly x

What a wonderful story of the joy that can be had when treating disabled people not just as disabled but as people. It sounds as though you were a natural at it. I very much enjoyed reading this entry to the contest. I hope it does well.

It is very apparent that you have a heart for those in need...especially someone needing the warmth of honest acceptance and shared emotion. This is a beautiful true story for the contest, Kay. I am sorry your personal work had to end for such a tragic reason, but your creative talent remains high an is revealed in stories like this one. My grandson is a special needs child and I pray he will find his place in today's rought world. He is extremely bright but doesn't really understand about social skills. We all have our problems to deal with. Thank goodness some of us have writing which is a great outlet for releasing tension.

I really hope your story wins, my friend. xo Janet (Alas, no sixes left.)

It is so fulfilling to work with the disabled or special needs individuals. I enjoyed reading your story and I too, would have loved working with these angels. Your story shows how much fun it can be working in a shelter and how one can learn from working there. Sorry about your accident. Best wishes for the contest.
