A very sad day. You've written of it brilliantly, and I have no suggestions for improvement. War is a terrible thing, wrong in every way, and endlessly repetitive it seems. I begged my son on his 21st birthday not to join the military as my sister's oldest son died that day in Afghanistan. My son went on to stay here and become a firefighter/paramedic, and I am so grateful that he uses his skills to save rather than to fight.

Oh that is so good. So much better to save lives. War never brings ongoing peace. Thank you so much for reviewing so thoughtfully.

This poem and story it tells is heart-wrenching and beautiful. I will never understand how a person manages to function after the loss of an identical twin (or any sibling, for that matter). In the picture, the twins look so young. Your poem is a fitting tribute to both brothers. Congratulations on your contest win.

A huge enthusiastic Congratulations on your win,
Wendy! This is a very poignant and heartfelt poem
about your father and uncle.
War is such a hell for everyone that goes through them, and their families back
home. All the best. ~

Thank you SO much Regina - for your caring words, and also for the congratulations and the Exceptional rating. These are humbling, and to me a great honour.
I really hate war and what it does to people, and this was my first poem about war, and it very much came from my heart. So I felt it honoured my father and uncle, to receive the validation of others as well.

That is so sad, I can just picture your father carrying his beloved twin brother off the field. I can understand him being traumatised after such a war. And still they go on, when will people learn to live together and only take what they need to get by, instead of going after others. Well done, and good luck in the contest. :)) Sandra xx

I agree with you about hating war; why can't there be peace between our countries? It has all to do with power. The only power I see is God's power. And we perhaps ask ourselves why does He not stop Russia from invading Ukraine?

Yes, I do wonder, but then the same about Hitler and WW 2, and all the other wars. I think at present He is allowing man to make His choices, and then when it reaches a climax He will step in - and man will face the judgement for those choices and their results. It makes me wish He would come soon. Thank you for such a thoughtful and understanding review, and also for the precious gift and honour of six stars.

This is a nicely written poem it has a great flow and rhyme scheme. How unbelievably sad to lose your twin brother to battle. I can't imagine the pain your father endured. Very moving piece of writing. I'm not a man to pray
But if I could change this day
I'd gladly take your place
So you wouldn't have to face
Death alone so far away."
And as he wept he lay
Beside his twin on hard dirt earth ...
Together since their very birth.
Pictures says it all ð???

More than just following a writing prompt, this poem tells a real tale of tragedy and loss. It's heart-breaking and also beautiful in the retelling. Thank you for sharing. I also concur with your hatred of war.

Your review brought tears to my eyes (again!). Many thanks for your encouragement and support, and also for the honour of six stars. I feel I never understood my father as a child, but now I do, and I wanted to honour him in this poem. I very much appreciate your review.

What a hard thing for your father to have to do and then try to live with those emotions, those memories. You told their story beautifully in your rhyming poem and I wish you well in the contest. Thanks for sharing your family story.

This poem touches this reader as I know it will all others who read it and connect with your father's loss of his twin in war. Such a traumatic event cannot even be imagined.

That's a pain that rarely goes away. Families carry the grief as well. Headstone finally get to rest when those alive join their kin. Sad. Both my grandfathers I-never met because of WW1
