What you've written here, some readers my agree with your expressed cautionary tale. I spent the afternoon & evening with a couple ypimg kids and many young adults. It was quite hopeful to see them visiting and visiting. The only phones I saw were for taking pictures. A great surprise to me.

I know what you write is true, JLR. Everyone grows up and moves away. They have a life of their own as well as children. Yet, that's life. In a way, this Christmas Zoom is the way to go. You can't fly and not even drive with the weather as it is. Still, it would be wonderful to see our children. Merry Christmas, my friend, and a Happy New year.

Jose! Merry Christmas?
Comment from Paul McFarland
That is a good one, Jim. A rare six stars - especially since it doesn't rhyme. I guess a lot of it has to do with the fact that you are hitting pretty close to home. Thankfully, our family has not moved very far away, but Christmas's are not what they use to be. Thank God, I still have my pickup truck.

Paul man what a great Christmas present! Very Merry Christmas, Sir!

This free verse, If Only, leans nostalgic to when family was the center of the universe and Christmas provided an opportunity to return and recharge for another year of expanding.

Oh if only. Unlike you, I have family that never seems to go away. Oh they will leave for a time, but then hard luck seems to be the only kind they know, and before you know it, they are back again. It is no longer a surprise, that they show up just before we pull the trigger on selling our four bedroom home and moving to a one bedroom senior apartment. As I said earlier, "Oh if only."

Comment from Dolly'sPoems
When a family spreads out it is difficult to travel long distances at Christmas and so we are connected to our loved ones through computers. It has become a common thing, but spending time with our loved owners in person is truly magical and cements memories. Phone calls and zoom calls are not as memorable. A poignant free-write, your words touch hearts here, much enjoyed, love Dolly x

Excellent poem and presentation for the picture this club event. It made me think about some of my children and grand children.
I wont get to see them all. Im lucky to live with my youngest daughter, son in law, and granson. My granddaughter will come too. You grasped the form well. Your descriptive words flow well expressing clear mental imagery.

We all miss " the laughter and hugs and great job in the house when the kids are young."
Those were the days of joy and no worries but hopes for better.
Now it is different. They are grown up and might live far away. Zooming is a way to show joy.
Thanks for sharing.

Comment from Thesis
You've portrayed the cycle of life and family evolution from when families were much closer and able to see each other for the holiday. Sadly, with better travel options and electronics, distance has replaced in person visits to impersonal zoom calls, no warm, tight, hugs and kisses. The ending was unexpected with family taking away the car.
