Hi Melissa,
This artwork is beautiful and shows the misty atmosphere of the poem.
I could just imagine the sound of the loon calling through the mist and then appearing as it swims through it.
Congrats for placing second in the contest.
Keep writing and stay healthy.
Have a good weekend.

This is a lovely entry for the contest, Melissa. I had to look up the sound of a loon call, since they're not native to these parts, and I had no idea. They look quite like a duck in the body, but certainly don't sound like them. So that's the sound from all those horror movies!
Great photo to add to the "haunted" atmosphere.
Best of like with this fine entry.

Hello, dear Craig, thank you so much for your wonderful review. I am always mesmerized by the sound of a loon. Even though I am a southern gal here in the States, I do appreciate the Northern lakes and the Loon. Thank you!!

Great description of the loon's lonely cry. It is one of despair. Certainly haunting to those who hear it. The cries emanating from the dawn mist makes them even more haunting. Excellent alliteration with loon's lonely. Best of luck in the contest. judi

Wonderful atmosphere to this poem. The loon's sound does come across as lonely, and you have captured most eloquently a place in time.
Wishing you much luck with the Contest Committee. :)

Thank you so much, Gloria. Every now and again I write about Loons. Their eerie call just resonates with me. Much appreciated.

Yes, Melissa, the sound of loons on a lonely lake is haunting.
You paired a perfect illustration for your contest entry.
I easily can imagine that combo in my mind.

Hey there Mark. Thanks so much. I really like the distinctive sound of the Loon and have a birding app that allows you to listen to calls that a lot of different birds make. When I want to write about Loons, I listen to the app. It really is a haunting sound. :).

This is a fine poem. I love the Sartori of the last line where you write about Loon's lonely despair. It works well and delivers a punch.
Thank you for writing such a beautiful piece.
I wish you all the best and hope you win the contest!

An intriguing and interesting piece. You handle the syllables well and make stimulating suggestions. I'm guessing lion is linked to lunar and loonie so there is a play on the moon possibly?

Hello there... in the northern US states there is a diving bird that is called a loon. It has a very distinctive call that is eerie and you will never forget the sound once you hear it. It mates for life and when you hear it, it is usually calling for its spouse. Thank you so much for your review.

Oh I see! Sorry it auto corrected to lion! I bet it's still linked to madness tho? One internet source says it is connected to the way the bird behaves when escaping.

This poem is certainly very haunting. I was a bit confused at first with the word 'loon' as to me that means a foolish person but I have since discovered that it can represent a water bird not native to the UK. Therefore, the poem now makes much more sense to me. I like your use of the colour blue to coincide with haunting and despair and the alliteration is the last line is good too.You have also included the correct number of syllables per line for the contest so good luck with it

That's a lovely poem for the contest. The 'haunting echoes' is an apt description of the 'loon's lonely despair.' And I love the imagery of the 'still, blue dawn mist.' Thank you for sharing, and best wishes in the contest.
