There a sad ending to this story but I'm sure something very similar has been played out on the battlefields many times. With couples separated in this way nothing is certain. They can only hope they will be lucky enough to see each other again.

Very sad story, I guess I am not a fun of the inglorious bastard kind of subject, and death it's always present in a war situation. Thank you for sharing and good luck with the contest.

Brett, this is a poignant write. I do realise it's from WW2 but could as well be from the present war in Ukraine. Tragic incidents like this happens all the time. Why can't we stop this madness? Because the aggressor don't want to. So we have to fight on.
Good luck, Ulla:)))

I suppose when life seems hopeless, the best thing to do would be to commit suicide, I fo believe soldiers did actually do that, if they refused to go "over the top" they would be executed anyway, the carnage was incredible, beautiful written, blessings Roy

This was one of a million battlefield last moments. Even in his last moments, Mark wanted to hold his beloved. The emotion ran deep through this. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this flash fiction piece. Gretchen

Thank you for sharing this flash fiction contest entry with us. I so wish our governments would realize war solves nothing. Of course, it's not the elite that goes to war. I enjoyed reading and wish you luck with the contest.

An interesting little piece. Good action and drama although I'm not convinced by a battle between a panzer and a man with a rifle. However, your use of the photograph is very poignant.

Awesome! It seems to happen that way when you least expect it, death comes a calling. What a wonderfully written story.
Good luck in the contest!

This flash fiction story, Battle Field, finds that the pressure to win and stay alive sometimes drives men to attempt the impossible. So it was with Mark. There are soldiers and then there are soldiers, but a tank is always a tank. Quick read and a sad ending.
