Congratulations Jim on your Fanstory contest win. The story's personalized yet matter-of-fact accounting of events to God is a plea both for mercy and hope that what happened is not forgotten. Well done.--Elaine

Thank you for being so kind!

Wow, what a story. It's a good thing I don't have to talk, because I've got a lump in my throat. This was very difficult to read, but it was written so well I couldn't stop. A heart-pounding and heart-breaking tale, filled with details, making it all the more believable (I see what you meant about using period information!!). Getting the opportunity to put it in prayer form was incredible. I loved the line "That innocent death, did it remind you of The Cross?" I look forward to reading more.

I'm sitting near a pond and the geese are shouting
Wank wank
These British geese have very bad manners.
Your story telling is live
Puts me in the gruesome scene.
We have a common disdain for war and cruelty.
Matthew future change to roses without the thorns. :-))Z.

I feel terrible when I see that they were all very young boys. They could have had a worthwhile life if they had lived. Sacrifice!! Was it really for the country? I am not sure .I am antiwar. I strongly feel that wars are fought for economic reasons to grab control.

I wanted to write the story to honor those who died so we might live. War is terrible. I recently attended the funeral of a veteran who passed away at my assisted living building. In addition to many other medals, he earned 5 purple hearts. When I think of what I did with my life, I am shamed.

This is extremely moving and poignant. beautifully written, not a word out of place. War is and was truly tragic. I don't think it has improved any in 80 years. The question is why? why do we have to keep going through this? why can't opponents just sit down to a good game of chess or some such?

I think as long as people seek power, there will be war. I've seen it in my work situations, great and small. Someone gets a little power and authority and their personality and actions change for the worse. Imagine if God was drunk with authority and power! None of us would survive.

This is a very powerful piece of writing here, Jim and it must have taken a lot out of you to write it. An utterly haunting story of capture and death which has been conveyed with maximum impact and minimum gratuitous detail. Worthy of a six (and more) but sadly I have none. Good luck in the contest! A strong contender! Debbie

Thank you so much for your kind words. Now with my wife gone and living in q small room, I find much time to write and I can usually write out a story or poem quickly.

This story is not about you. The story says fiction so I'm sure you are writing about what you imagine might have happened back then. It is a very real sounding story and a good entry for the Dear God contest.

I thought the rules would allow this. I ws projecting myself into the characters' words ,especially in reference to fear of death and trust in God.
