One guy all alone keeping to himself is going to bring down the united states in time of war merely by being german. He was here before the war started. Lester's Aunt had something to do with it I bet. Karen

OMG! I have to feel so sorry for Lester, his aunt is a monster! Now the secret is out, and it looks like Artie is in danger. Heddy's parents and her brother, have been quite lenient with her, especially Willis having just come home from the war. Now to see what happens next! Excellent, my friend. :) Sandra xxx

This sets the tone of the setting and the plot and it creates who the characters are. ""You won't get the truth out of him. Leave that to Wayne and me. We'll make him tell the truth. Yes, sir, he will regret sneaking around to protect a Nazi and for stealing."
the plot thickens: "Willis shakes his head. "I don't know what to believe, Heddy. All I know is you and Lester are playing a dangerous game. Why didn't you tell anyone about him?" & "My daddy is pacing all the while Willis is telling what happened at the post office. He won't look at me, not really, he just looks from Willis to my momma. "So, is the German still here on the island?" A great suspenseful end

As they always say, "where there's smoke there is fire." But many times we smell it long before we see it, if we don't mistake it for someone grilling meat. :-) Thanks for sharing.

Unless it's the butcher's house on fire, a house ablaze rarely smells like grilled steak. Lol. Thank you for this awesome and humorous review and rating. Gretchen

I am so into this story. Very well done. I can't wait for the next chapter! Heddy is a sweetheart and her boyfriend Lester very well defined characters. Thanks. Esther

Hello Gretchen,
I wisely hung on to one last six this week, I'm so glad. Wow! This was a riveting chapter gal. I'm afraid what is going to happen to Lester if he stays with his aunt and uncle. Eventually he'll grow up, and I'm sure he will have a hard time forgetting how he was treated. It would be wise for his aunt to remember that. As for Artie, I hope he's OK. I can only imagine what's happened to him. I feel bad for Heddy, she's just a little girl whose been put in a difficult spot. I'm so looking forward to the next chapter. Well done gal.
Have a blessed evening.
Tom

Thanks so much, Tom. I don't think Mrs. Collette worries too much about repercussions of her questionable actions. She feels the world ad everyone in it owes her. I'm so glad you enjoyed it. Thank you for this excellent review and the extra star. Much appreciated. Gretchen

Aw..People were so mean to those from a county we were at war with. I hope no one has hurt him and the Willis and Heddy's father one join in attacting him. I think of all those Japanese we put in war camps. Fear makes people do strange things. I love your story.

Wish I had a sixth star. I am sure Lester's aunt badgered him into telling where Artie is, and she no doubt led her neighbors to burn him out. I really don't like her kind of neighbor. We have one in our subdivision, and she tried to convince everyone a really nice massage therapist was running a whore house. I need to go back as I must have missed a chapter, and your writing is too good to even miss a word.

I think Heddy's dad is a good man, he is also a kind and just man, I know German men who were forced to fight, as schoolboys latterly in the war, who hated what Hitler was doing, they are the same as us. But Heddy's dad and brother will come good, well done Gretchen, blessings Roy

Oh man, I don't want to wait. Poor Artie, I hope he doesn't get hurt. At least, it sounds like Willis and Heddy's dad are willing to give Artie the benefit of the doubt.

Another wonderful chapter.
