great poem and great image. The Sultan of Swing indeed. Loved the last lines the best

Debating disaster, the gulf's even vaster,
The elephant's swallowed the room.
November draws nearer, the future grows clearer
And Kamala promises doom!

Kiwisteveh is a very capable rhymer, and can ride a romping meter like a roped-on Nemo. His target in this poem is unmistakable and his verbal barrage at DT cannot reasonably be gainsaid. As an aside, I think there is an aspect of psycho-social humanity that we fail (thus far) to understand other than by insults. Somehow, people who must know better are persuaded to stand behind this pompous harlequin; how can this be?

Frank, thanks for the kind words and the extra star.

Many people I talk to here in New Zealand are simply amazed that anyone with a grain of common sense could follow someone with his dodgy history of fraud and stupidity, let alone vote for him. And yet, as we both know, he commands a loyal and steadfast fan-base.

As far as my wife and I can tell, you only need to listen to him speak for a few minutes to know precisely the kind of man he is. Why others can't see/hear/sense it is beyond us.

Many Americans are as puzzled as you two are about Trump, but nonetheless he as found a means of appealing very strongly to a significant portion of Americans. Among educated Americans, the main defenses made of Trump are that he is better for the security of the nation, and that he is better for the economy of the nation. Additionally, the advocacy for diversity has put many citizens (particularly the European heritage white males) down in the stowage part of the ship of state's hull, a socially inferior location they've only begun to inhabit in about the last thirty years. Nobody likes demotion, no matter how eloquently the demoter can justify his (and sometimes her) ideals.
What Republicans dislike probably more than anything is giving away to particular groups what they perceive themselves, sometimes correctly, to have earned by lifetimes of work. So a would-be Davy Crockett like Trump appeals to this group, and it's difficult or impossible to present an argument that is persuasive to this same group. As to his verbal clumsiness, it's revolting for me to think of this ignoramus as up for another four years in the world's most powerful position. As Mr. Spock would say, "Interesting."

Thanks, Frank. I think I get all that.

What I, and many other people who are not Americans, DON'T get is that a criminal can be a good candidate for this particular job. Add to that about a thousand other things that would almost certainly be disqualifying in any other election around the globe. he is a racist, a misogynist, an adjudicated sexual predator, a convicted fraudster, a liar, a bully, a cheat.

All of which begs the question - who are these people who would still vote for him?

Harris pulled further ahead in the latest polls which is encouraging. Inflation is finally coming down to reasonable levels, interest rates are dropping, the stockmarket is booming.

And Trump doesn't even like dogs.

This is great poem, I was drawn in immediately with your use of alliteration and how you've captured this person to a T!
Each verse bringing more wrath to the fire.
Well done I really enjoyed this. But it's maddening also thinking about him..

Thanks, Nicki, and welcome to FanStory. I hope you like it here.

What is truly maddening is that there are nearly enough cult-followers in the US to see him get elected again which would be a total disaster.

Hello Steve,
True is a wonderful thing. Hopefully the moderates and independents
will see him in your accurate portrayal. The extremist don't care what
what he says or does. (though there some many on both sides)
It's sad to thing anyone would vote for a convicted felon, sexual abuser
and likely rapist. Guilt of sedition (euphemism for traitor).
And the list goes on.
Well written with all the great poetics - rhymes, meter, etc.
Best wishes.
Robert

Thanks, Robert. I appreciate the kind words and the extra star.
I have no expectations that anything I write will make the slightest bit of difference, but venting gives me some satisfaction and I am quietly convinced that he will be defeated once again in November, although what will happen beyond that is a little blurry in my crystal ball! With luck the vote will be so decisive that he won't be able to pull any stunts like he did last time.

I totally agree with your words. Hopefully, the election will be peaceful. I do have my doubts. The poem is written well. Great job on the rhyming.

Hi Steve,
I loved your poem. It is well-written, and makes a clear stab at Donald Trump. I'm like you... I don't have a vote in this coming November election. I wouldn't want to be faced with deciding who to vote for... Trump or Harris. It's sad to think that many Americans will be voting for the lesser of two evils. If I was an American, I couldn't vote for Kamala because she is for abortion. In my opinion, with a few exceptions, abortion is murder. It's premise is based on a lie, that a woman has the right to abort a child. It's her choice. Kamala Harris is promising to restore a federally-guaranteed right to abortion overturned by the Supreme Court two years ago. So I couldn't vote Democrat. But that doesn't mean I would vote for Trump either. He's taking the easy way out, letting each individual state decide if they want to legalize abortion, or not. Right now, he's pro-life, but he wasn't always of that mind. In 1999, he said: "I hate the concept of abortion." But he went on to say... "Still, I just believe in choice."
Your poem gallops along, filled with inner rhymes and alliteration, a joy to read. You've nailed Trump, and it's plain to tell you wouldn't vote for him ... if you had the right to vote. So who to vote for? You'd think there'd be a good alternative in a country of roughly 244 million Americans who will be eligible to vote in 2024. But, basically, it's either Trump or Harris.
I'd like to highlight one or two lines in your poem as my favorites, but they're all so good, filled with truth about Trump. And yet, he has so many supporters, a cult of followers. He could be the next President.
Nicely penned! Thanks for sharing.
Cheers,
Kimbob

Hi, Kimbob. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I respect your opinion about abortions and I agree that it should be avoided where possible. However, the current situation in states that have total bans or bans after six weeks is intolerable and unworkable.
In case it wasn't clear in my poem, I truly believe Trump to be a despicable man and a clear and significant danger to the US and thus to the world. As for his beliefs about abortion, he is simply a leaf blowing in the wind and will say and do anything to benefit himself.
have no expectations that anything I write will make the slightest bit of difference, but venting gives me some satisfaction and I am quietly convinced that he will be defeated once again in November, although what will happen beyond that is a little blurry in my crystal ball! You disguise your feelings so well, Steve. ;-) This is a well-written poem in good metre and rhymes both internal and external and a snappy cadence that accentuates the satirical tone.

I would change the last line though, to bring home the message

And Kamala promises doom!
And Harris delivers his doom!

By all standards, the debate was a clear win for Harris even though Trump proclaims it was his best debate ever. *cough* Among many other missteps, he proved he knows nothing about his own policies which raises the question, whose policies are they? Clearly they aren't Trump's because after nine years of really putting his mind to it, he only has concepts of a policy to replace the ACA. My guess is that he didn't even give it a first or second thought. As one economist noted from the debate, Trump proved that he is a fraud. And that he did.

But he is publicity savvy. Now instead of talking about the fact that Trump is a fraud who knows nothing about policy, the media is focused on his unhinged, disgraceful lie that Haitians are eating pet cats and dogs in Ohio. One main stream media reporter even said they were eating animals there. Wait, what? People eat animals all the time. Bacon comes from a pig, etc. etc. You can eat those animals, but you can't eat a pet pooch. That's almost akin to eating a family member.

Anyway, an entertaining read and I wish you great luck with the Contest Committee. :)

    Thanks, Gloria.

I think/hope his star is on the wane. By the way his Hollywood one should be ripped up. Hopefully more and more people are seeing through his act, although God knows why they couldn't see it was an act from the get-go! His lies are becoming more and more blatant like the one you cough at as well as the dog-eating immigrants he's promising to deport, even though they are all in the US legally
I suspect the Committee frown upon such overtly political posts, but let's wait and see,

I write pros. But like poetry or prose, I think its best when we connect as a larger family from all walks of life. There are thousands of children from the border allowed in, many of whom are being abused, many sold into sex slavery under Harris/Biden. Rapes, etc...Fact check it. Got aways..."Let he who is without sin cast the first stone." She slept around too. But you've inspired to write a poem about self-righteousness, which seems to be very evident among those who hate Trump. I'm always impressed with poetry like this that can resonate within strict parameters.

Thanks for stepping up to review, even though you clearly disagree with the content of my poem.
I don't want to start an argument, but I am going to make a couple of comments in rebuttal:
If the border is such a problem, why did Trump step in to kill the bipartisan border bill that had many components and funding to make the border more secure. It was largely constructed by Republican Senator Lankford who was devastated that his months of work on this vital issue was just wiped away because Trump didn't want Biden to have a win.
    2. She slept around too. Just another slur put out by opponents. Harris has been happily married for 20 years. I don't think you could say the same for Trump. As the poem says, he cheated repeatedly on each of his THREE wives. Just a little rich since he claims to value loyalty above nearly everything else.

    PS self-righteousness? What's this, then?
"I think it's best when we connect as a larger family from all walks of life."

    Have a great day.

I saw you posted this on Facebook so decided to come review it here. It's Pitch perfect assessment, and the delivery is top notch. Great flow and rhyming. Outstanding alliteration. Immense wit and comic delivery too.

This is one of my favorite stanzas:

He's pasty, he's pouty, he's putrid, he's painted,
He claims every day he's a victim.
His cronies are crooked, his cohorts are tainted
And daily poor choices afflict him.

AND THIS TOO:
He's rotten, he's rude and he's callous and crude,
Insulting all those who oppose him.
The basics of courtesy seem to elude
both him and the cultists who chose him.

Both made me LOL.

But my favorite is this stroke of genius line:

The elephant's swallowed the room.

Bravo! I agree with friend's comment: this should go viral!

Rama, thanks so much for coming back specially to review this. Much appreciated. I know it won't fare well in the contest - too political. I have posted it on Twitter as well but it hasn't attracted much attention there, even though I've supposedly got 1800 followers. Perhaps I'll get off my butt and put it on my YouTube channel as well!
I haven't got the reach to make any difference in your election but if In can make even a few people laugh and pay attention I will be happy. There are a few recent signs that Harris is gaining support in Florida. Do you notice anything?
In any case, good luck. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

I'm very hopeful she will win. I shared your poem with my mom and four brothers. they LOVED it! I almost shared it on Facebook, but I never post political things, so I shied away from it. I may forward to a few other friends. ON twitter, followers may see your post only if they are on their wall at the moment you post it or if they visit your profile directly. You Tube might fare better. Be sure to use hashtags so people searching for those keywords might find it.

Hi Steve,
This is a nicely rhymed and smoothly metered poem about all the thing ex-president Trump has done to deflate his chances of winning. He doesn't or won't see it that way. It is hard to say I want either to be president. But, vice-president Kamala Harris is better.
I like the artwork.
Keep writing and stay healthy
Good luck in the contest.
Enjoy the rest of your weekend.
Joan.
By the way, I have just published a book that is now available on Amazon. It is titled The Interloper (and other stories in prose and poetry) by Joan Pechter
