Hattie has more patience that I would have. I would say that you had heard about a new place opening that offered better food and transparent dealings with their residents. They work for you not vice versa. Karen

You would have kicked his squirrelly butt, of that I am sure, my friend!

I would have taken huge offense of being called to the principals office. Karen

Now, we know who the earring the ladies found belongs to Mrs. Hazel. It should be interesting. I know Hattie May is not going to leave this alone at all. Harold Chapman only made her more suspicious, and rightly so. Love the story. I'm sure Greg could it in no time at all. LOL
The Director's smile immediately turned upside down. (because of 'The' there should be lower case 'd' on 'director's')

Great catch! Thank you, Mrs, Barbara. This has been so much fun to write!

I thought I had given you a six on this post. I meant has six stars in the box. I realized it didn't happen when I saw how many six stars I had left. I have no clue how it happened. I am not a fan of computers.

No worries, my friend!

But your writing is deserving.

The best gift you have ever given me is your friendship. I treasure it.

This dialogue is skilfully done here to convey the determined nature of Hattie and the equally determined although suspicious and weird character of Mr Chapman. I love the playful description of his fake smile and the cat imagery and the way you enable this conversation to entertain and amuse the reader whilst always conscious of the need to advance the plot. Thanks for sharing, Doug. Take care Debbie

This has been quite a thrill to write!

Well, it seems that chat netted her some information. Now she knows who the earring belongs to. I'm sure she isn't willing to let her investigation drop. If I was in a facility I was having to pay foe, I would resent being questioned.

Why is it that fools who find themselves in charge of something and older people are involved they instantly think we have lost our ability to think properly? This creep thinks he can pull the wool over Hattie's eyes... what an error on his part. I loved the exchange between them and Hattie's silent thoughts.... oh yes, and the clue. Well done!

What a creepy and insincere man (and a liar! And a bit of a sleaze too!) who seems to take Mrs Hatfield for a fool. She's pretty sharp and will give back as good as she gets.
Edit:
a lazy cat climbing onto it's (its) favorite pillow. ("it's" is short for "it is")
you don't know anything about that do you, Mrs. Harfield?" (Hatfield)
I'm enjoying your story.

Great catches, Wendy!

It seems to me that Mr Chapman doesn't feel good about Hattie asking questions about the dead man, but I'm pretty sure there's something going on to feel a little threatened by an old lady asking questions. Well done Douglas, blessings Roy

Have you been away? Seems it has been a while since the last chapter.
MAybe it is the water. I haven't penned much in months, in fact, I thought of dropping away since I do far more comments than pieces

No. Just putting out one chapter a week. Been writing on other sites.

I'm sorry I've missed your story. It looks like you have a great premise of elderly women sleuths in a care home. Puts some of that natural busy-bodiness to work!
You very clearly showed the director to be slime, maybe complicit or maybe just slime. Lol.
I have a few comma suggestions for you:
The balding pasty man in the fancy collared dress shirt
(balding, pasty man) (fancy, collared)
"Ah Mrs. Hatfield, how cute
(Ah, Mrs.)
An intriguing chapter!
