Those are the best kind of stories! Overcoming adversity has a way of building confidence that could otherwise take the opposite affect on someone who gives up. I love the advice that your grandfather gave you. Thank you for sharing your story. Thank you for also serving in the military.

Excellent response to the prompt. This tale depicts an awesome and inspirational message about the human spirit surviving against the odds. Very well written. Worked very well for the reader.

Gosh, I so appreciate you sharing this Harry. I was not very attractive when I was born either. I had my twin sister slightly stuck to my head. She had died in the development and part of her absorbed into me. I had to have plastic surgery. Today, only a slight scar remains which I cover with makeup. A piece of my frontal lobe is missing too, but it's never been a problem. I'm blind now but it's not from that but a lot to overcome nonetheless. I overcome every day by writing. A wonderful, encouraging story of your spirit, Harry. I wish you all the best.

Reading this story one concept comes to mind, R-E-S-I-L-I-E-N-C-E, you won by proving anybody wrong, and that thing that made you feel less as a child made you the strong person you are today.

Your story has a scary beginning as we want to know why you were taken from your mother and what your "problem" was. Then we see how you dealt with being physically deformed. I was pleased by how you handled yourself in Boot Camp and followed your grandfather's creed. Rod

Congratulations for overcoming what many saw as adversity, but I wonder if you could do all the things others could do, it shouldn't be called a travesty, or whatever synonyms might be used. Well done. Bravo Zulu.

I thought it was a great story of perseverance, of overcoming adversity, told with personality and a great, warm voice and tone. You did a great job of connecting the reader to your mother, and the anxiety that gripped her when you were born with a medical condition that prevented her from being with you. We could really feel her frustration and fear there. Then you went on to describe how difficult kids make it for people out of the norm. We could feel your sense of being an outcast there. But you seem to have taken it all in stride and ended up in the army, with a great health score. It is a testament to believing in yourself. I think it has the bones of a novel. You just have to flesh out the characters and tell it like a story. estory

Well said. Your grandfather was right...and thank you for your service. Sometimes, in fact, many times the world around us can be daunting and depressing. We're entering one of those times now. It's incumbent on us to find that one glint of hope amid the churning chaos and pursue it with our heart and soul. You did and you overcame a perceived imperfection. Be true to yourself and the rest is unimportant. Thanks for sharing it. Be well.

My pleasure, Harry, and call me Frank. F. William Lester is a quasi-pseudonym I use for my book(s) to differentiate from my shorter works. Have a great day.

This is a well-told story also. I was born with the left side of my head attached to my shoulder. They poked fun at me, too, but I became the fastest runner in my country school. You have one sentence that needs some repairs, mostly keeping to the first person. . . . (had) to take (her) baby . . . before (she) could see (me).
