Masterful writing about a woman much loved. Your words are musical and with each stanza you slowly open up your grandmother's first love as gently a rose petal. Great read.

i really think that the beautiful secret you unveil in these lines are very clear and the clever jottings of the letter are so heart touching and cute but i think if you would have used more fine or soft words, this poem would have come out more vividly.

What lovely memories you must have. To find something so special after all those years and she chose you to share it with. Your fondness for your grandmother shines through in every word, as does her fondness for you. Remarkable! The flow of the poem was quite hypnotic and very well done. Good luck in the contest.

MyYiaYia, what a beautiful pen name. I apologize for just responding to this exceptional review. It means even more to me, for this poem paid you not one thing to give of your time and stars. Thank you so very much. It did come in second place, which I was thrilled with, for this simple poem was up against some phenomenal works and artisit..again thank you so much..jlsavell

You will find that the really good reviewers don't give a hang about the money, just the work they are reading. It is the quality of the piece, not the quantity of money the piece provides. In my book, I do it for the thrill of coming upon gems, such as yours, that stand out from the pack and are worthy of my time and comments. Yours was one of these. Thanks for the wonderful reply. Damnit, I have never awarded so many sixes to any single competetion on this site, EVER.
My God, woman, you've finished me. I don't know if I can start and finish the next one.
This is a gorgeous recounting of THE TRUTH, the closeness you shared with your gran and the wonderment of your verse.
Good luck in the booth~

Very nice piece. Well written. Excellent and gracious tribute to your grandmother. Your verbiage was vivid enough that one could almost smell the 'musty old oak drawer'. Or envision you with the costume jewelry and scarves. Thank you for sharing such an intimate time.

This is such a lovely tribute to the memory of your grandmother. I can feel the bond that the two of you had, and it is especially clear since she shared with you about the secret drawer. Her image is more visible because of the details in your poem. I especially like the sensory words 'musty' and 'lavender.' Good luck with the contest. ann

Comment from Nanette Mary
Hullo Jlsavell ....
This is a well written piece of free-thought writing in which you describe some of what was written on the hidden postcards in your dear Grandmother's secret drawer.
Judging by the date of the two that you quoted, perhaps Edwin was one of the many soldiers who did not return from the War. My Grandmother's name was Emma Louise.
Thank you for sharing this with you and I wish you well in the Contest.
Love from ..... Nanette Mary.

Nanette Mary, thank you so much for stopping by. I feel honored to be chosen with some of the highest caliber poets on fanstory, you included. Yes, I do believe he was in the war. There are no more postcard from him after somewhere in the middle of the year 1915. She had scores of them up until then. She married my grandfather in 1916, Their firstborn, a son, died at 3 mths of age. She went on to have 3 more children, one was my mother. She also raised my Uncle from his birth in 1926. Her brother's wife had died giving birth to him. His name was Johnny and he was killed in the war in 1944. Again thank you so very much for stopping by. I need to get to the booth as soon as I answer reviews. I so look forward to reading yours... jlsavell

I love the grandmother stories and this one is no different in my heart as others that were so well written. You captured the piece of her heart that was wrapped in the ribbon and shared her spirit with us, there is so much inside those secret hideaways of the heart..nicely done, good luck, and much love, my friend! Competition you always bring it!!! hugs
