Left-handed, But Not Stupid

Being left-handed I was made to feel stupid.

I enjoyed your story. My husband is left-handed, and he had teachers who tried to make him write with his right. He was treated as stupid for being left-handed.
Having mastered crochet and sewing, you are certainly talented.
Best wishes,
Mary

Thank you so much Mary for your wonderful review. I know that I am not stupid by any stretch of the imagination even though I only have a high school diploma. I may actually be more intelligent than many people who have college degrees. I have a lot of life experience, which is taught me a lot. I want to let you know that I am in rehab. I fell a week ago Sunday, I broke two bones, one in my femur, and I broke my pelvis bone on the left-hand side, so I will have to be in rehab for a while. I may not do much posting, but I probably will try. To do some reviewing, which I am able to do using my iPad. I wish you the very best day. Thank you so much again for your final review.

Of course you were not stupid! I was youngest of five and my parents were older.
my dad was born in 1919. Mom in 1931. I mean I grew up hearing stories like yours. My daughter left handed too and she was in all gifted classes but years ago people didn't realize. As a teacher myself I saw left handed children using both like you just to fit in. Good for you that you could do that! :)

One of my favourite derivations is the Latin for left which is 'sinister', as you probably know. Left handers were seen as evil. Whereas the Latin for right is 'dexter'. Right handed folks were dexterous. Scary, huh?

Thank you so much for your kind review. I appreciate it very much. I broke a couple bones in my hip and in my pelvis and I will be in rehab for a couple of weeks at least and then I will have a period of about three months to heal, so I may not be around very much for a while.

I enjoyed your story. I heard similar stories from my mother, who was made to use her right hand. One suggestion: your third paragraph might read better if you broke it into 2 sentences and deleted one 'hospital' phrase. I'm glad someone invented left-handed scissors. Left-handed children always struggled in school. Blessings. Carol

I found this a little surprising because it never occurred to be that being left handed would make someone feel stupid. I've known several left-handed people that somehow felt they were special and little smarter than anyone else. Science has made studies and discovered left-handed poeple have a wider scope of thinking and make better leaders. Among the presidents Ford, Reagan,Truman, Bush, Clinton and Obama were a few were. There were others. Teachers were very foolish to try to change a left handed child.

That is a well written piece. You are certainly not stupid. I think your ability to use both hands is wonderful. It certainly has served you well over the years! Evi

In England, the call a left handed person as Mollydooker! I don't think it is patronising and it is just accepted in schools these days, but I know long ago it had a different meaning. You have learned so many skills with your hands Patricia, much enjoyed, love Dolly x x x

You did a great job, Patricia, with your informative
post. We lefties are among some of the smartest
people in the world. I understood how things changed
for you over time. I could never learn to crochet even with a left-
handed book--there was still no one to teach me. I could
tie the thread around a needle though.
Thanks for sharing, Jan

Never stupid being left-handed. In fact I'm always impressed because 1) I always think it looks more attractive; 2) I believe I've heard that left-handed people are generally more intelligent. My daughter is left-handed so I might be a little biased (but she is a member of Mensa). That said, to be ambidextrous is particularly enviable because you are using both sides of your brain! A fascinating and thought-provoking read here, Patricia, and I'm glad your strength of character pulled through. No errors in the text. Take care Debbie

Dear Pat, I am your perfect reviewer for this piece of writing

because I had almost the same experience. I am naturally left-handed but

right eye dominant - so some things (including sewing!) I can do equally easy

with both hands. When my dad saw me using hammers and screwdrivers, he

dubbed me 'left hand Sam! I draw, write and paint left handed, I play

snooker left handed, I would use a rifle left handed, but a pistol right handed

- throw darts left, a ball right, play guitar right, eat right, kick a soccer ball

right - so I was an interesting puzzle to my parents!

Because I learned calligraphy quite early on, I used a left-handed nib to write

italic script - and was astonished to hear people say quite often, "What

wonderful handwriting for a left-hander!" So, your teacher's out of date views

still existed over here in the UK as late as the 1970s.

I loved your piece because what seemed a disadvantage at first, turned into

a triumph, with all the beautiful work you made and the prizes which you

won.

No,neither of us are stupid Pat, and most of us think left-handers are the

brightest people of all.

Your friend, Paul

This is an absolutely wonderful review and I appreciate it so very much. I loved your story. About the only things that I really do left-handed as I each had right when I was doing all the painting, our artwork is in a kind I did it left-handed but now most everything that I do is right, handed except for eating and writing. One of the little scale that I have is, I can take a piece of chalk in each hand. Then I can write my name, forwards and backwards at the same time. My left hand or right, my name backwards, my right hand writes my name forwards.

Glad that helped. I believe that Lewis

Carroll could do that trick - and

    developed mirror writing that way.
