We have learned to be silent, to be complacent... but in doing so, we have forgotten the preciousness of our freedoms. Our right to free speech must never be taken for granted. The pen is still mightier than the sword.

Thank you for writing this poem and posting the challenge to FS writers. We particularly on FS (as writers) should be concerned with this assault on free speech. We need to be vigilant always.

just finished one to post tomorrow-can post no more today. You are wonderful to get this started. We all need to be more vocal, less fearful, and more out-spoken about the vile actions of the terrorists. Thanks so much for posting this, Dawn.

It is a tragedy that this happened and we as sane human beings have to stand up to this type of tyranny no matter what it takes. They can no destroy us even though they are trying. Good job of expressing your point in this short work.

JE SUIS CHARLIE.
I don't speak or write French, but that's my message. We cannot allow low life, mentally inferior, foolish murders kill the creative voice. I don't care if what you creative is hard core or lovely, you have the right to scribble down your words or cartoons. Yesterday, over 10,000 French people came together and held up pens and pencils. This act was copied all around the world. THESE FOOLS DON'T THAT THEY JUST MADE US STRONGER!!!!!

Excellent my friend! Good on you, I am now going to write a poem too about how disgusting those terrorists are. We cannot let them destroy what we have taken decades to build, our human rights! I was so upset and angry, these people are not human, they are not animal either, animals don't kill for pleasure. This was a real pleasure to read!!! :) Sandra

Hi Ideasaregems-Dawn,
the murder of the staff of Charlie Hebedo has certainly shocked many in Europe, but let's be realistic, it is well known that fundamentalists cannot bear having something they hold dear mocked. While most adherents will ignore it and carry on, the types who join groups like IS are a threat simply because they will not ignore it, and will die trying to extract 'vengeance' on anyone and everyone they think doesn't show sufficient 'respect' for their faith.
Unfortunately, those in our own society who have promoted the ideal that 'all religions are the same' and 'all cultures are equally valid' have created an environment which encourages this kind of response by idiots unable to accept that their ideological version of their faith is not, and will never be, acceptable to everyone else. As long as our politicians refuse to deal with it and its promoters firmly, we will see more of these attacks.

Patrick, as always, you hit the mark perfectly with your comments, IMO. I have actually started a dialogue (I hope) on my profile page (in response to another review on this topic - this thinking is not isolated - a few have said it - perhaps we shouldn't 'poke an angry bear with a stick'). I disagreed, basically saying that 'free will' was given to us by God, and our lives belong to Him. Our 'choices' (free will) can't be determined by others or those others will reign. Freedom of expression is one of our most precious liberties and words might wound, but are not fatal - a bullet is. (My mother taught me "sticks and stones may break our bones but words will never hurt us...")
