It would take a special kind of mom to remain calm with a skunk in her kitchen, not to mention waking up her children to watch it share their tuna chowder. What a wonderful recounting of a special childhood memory.
Good use of dialogue to further your narration in and interesting and suspenseful way. I enjoyed your story very much. Good luck as you continue to polish and edit.

Life's simple pleasures are the best! I believe those are song lyrics. Good idea mother had to let the skunk lead them to his entryway. Very Cute!
"...jumped up onto the cupboard circling the pan" is a line that brings it to life for me because I have seen a mouse circling a pan just like that.

I live where we have a lot of skunks in the summer. Many times in the night I wake up to that awful smell almost to the point of gagging. I would not want one in the house. Patricia
