hi good story...I had a couple horses in my life like this, the ones that took my heart, that left me different...I still miss them...one was not mine to keep, though I retrained him and kept him outa the meat wagon...the other i had to put down after he stayed with me for a couple years and had at least the last years of his life happy...he had been a show jumper, injured ridden under draw reins and drugged to keep going, he had neck band injuries and spinal problems and was labeled 'dangerous'...he was a love, not dangerous, just often in excruciating pain...i loved him.
I will read your other horse and farm peices when i have time...not often i get to read someone with some of my expereinces...

Thank you. We had a dairy farm and I often bought horses that had been starved and otherwise neglected. I would get them back in shape and try to find good homes for them. Cats too, lots of cats. All the animals I have now are drop offs or cats I found along the roads. I don't have any horses now as I'm 70 and we no longer have the big farm. I miss them sometimes and will always have a special spot in my heart for horses. It makes my heart ache to see them abused or starving. Thanks for reading my story. Carmen was a special animal.

This is wonderful. Enjoyed every word. God bless you for your animal advocacy, especially with horses. (One of my passions, too, mostly with dog and cat rescue.) Congratulations on winning the contest with your touching story. Marilyn

Thanks< BeasPeas. I rescued a lot of dogs, cats, and horses. I hate to see an animal being starved or mistreated. Read one of my recent stories about The Boys, Disposable Pets. I think you will like it.

Oh! What a story! And one to highlight so much of you too! I love it, and can see why, and how you won the contest. Congratulations!
It reminds me of `The Horse Whisperer Story,' and one of my daughter in laws Paula. Indeed, I could easily envision it was her on Carmen's back. And, Paula has recently welcomed back Lady for retirement and love; although she was not in the cruelly sad state of Carmen, but the children had grown and she was neglected. She was my grandson Harry's first horse, and recently as she recovered some strength and trust now14 he sat on her, his legs almost on the ground. She seemed to smile as if her life was fulfilled and content.
I am blessed to have two children and a grand family whose love and life flower around their horses. And, another son who is a carer for his partner, also a dear and very creative, but their life is limited to the simple struggles for love and life each day. I would dearly love to see my son pursuing some creative, and personal life enhancing interest, but so far it seems he is contentedly fulfilling some soul destiny, far above the imaginings or nurturing of his parents.
Thank you so much for sharing your special stories and self. I think you are a natural writer with many gifts to bless our humanity and life on this precious Earth. My blessings, Maureen*&*

Thank you very much for the six stars. I have rescued a lot of horse over the years. Carmen was special and I kept her until she died of old age. I thought Carmen was going to die when I first got her. You can't began to imagine the shape she was in. I will never understand how folks can call themselves human and do such things to living animals. I'm glad there are good people like you in this world.

Yes! I am so glad there is much increasing and loving humanity in our world too, and many more actually enjoying empowering a better future and new hope for all. Happy Valentine's Day, Maureen*&*

Thank you for such a lovely story of hope and brightness that comes from caring and generosity. Carmen sounds like a heavenly girl and I am so glad you both got a chance to share you lives together. So rare and amazing is the friendship that a human can share with an animal.

Thank you. Every animal I have is just part of the family. Carmen was a special horse and I loved her very much. I'm so glad I was able to show her that all people are not bad. It took a while to convince Carmen that I meant her no harm.

I commend you for rescuing any/all animals. Your story is important. That you took the time with the neglected, abused horse is special. You were her only friend, and God will remember. [are you familiar with Rainbow Bridge google it/ you will like it] Good job and thanks for sharing and caring.

Thank you. I have rescued many horses, cats, and dogs over the years. It does my heart good to watch them come back to life and be happy again.

Oh my gosh, this brought a tear to my eye, but I am so happy she had you. Of all the animals, horses are so gentle and beautiful and I always wonder how people can do the things they do. Well written and said so much in this short space. Great story.

Thank you. I could have said a lot more about Carmen but contest only allowed 300 words. She was a great horse.

Hi there,
I have to say that this brought a tear to my eye. A great piece for the copetition. How anyone can mistreat animals like that is beyond me. Deplorable doesn't go far enough!
All the best for this well written piece.

Thank you. You would be surprised how many horses are mistreated. It costs a lot of money to take care of a horse properly. A lot of folks get horses and then find out they can't afford to feed and care for them properly. I took in a lot of horses and brought them back to good health. Carmen was special and I kept her until she died of old age.

I really admire your love for Carmen. It's always better to trust animals more than people. Glad you spend lot of time with them. I really liked the way this essay written, how you made it believe you. All the best

Thank you. I have been surrounded by animals of one kind or another my whole life. I couldn't imagine life without them.

Hi,
It sounds like GOD lead you right to her and got the deal of the century to boot. I am sure she appreciated the rescue when she understood. I would bet that is the reason she would do anything you asked of her and gave it her best shot. I am sure she loved you totally with her whole heart. Rescued animals seem to become even more loyal to their owners when they realize they are safe. My two dogs were that way too. I have never had the opportunity to own a horse even though all my life I have wanted one. I could never afford to have one and I never had a place I could keep one either. Of course, I would have loved to of had all kinds of animals just not snakes.
I find that animals understand more than they are given credit for. People in general just don't understand them. This is a very beautiful story even though it is sad that you lost her it is still very special and well written too. I found much to my surprise that when I lost my German shepherd Dog that due to circumstances beyond my control. My mom needed a service dog so I got another dog within a month. I discovered that each animal that we love has a special place in our hearts forever just for them. but there is always room for more. Each one has their place and their own personality, likes and dislikes. I also believe that they go to heaven and we'll see them again some day. GOD loves us perfectly so HE understands our need and love for our animals. Therefore HE would understand our desire to have them with us forever. Paradise just wouldn't be the same without our animals. Anyways, it is an excellent story.
Best Regards from one Animal lover to another.

Thank you for the six stars. Carmen deserves them whether I do or not. She was a very special sort of a horse. Each animal. be it dog, cat, or horse; has a unique personality that is all their own. I agree with you about the snakes; those I can live without. LOL

Hi Mystery Writer
What a shame you have no other entries in this contest. Your story is lovingly and beautifully told. So much story and so few words, your tiny tale tells so much about you and your beautiful Carmen, By the end, I felt I was part of your experience. She certainly was a beauty. The gentle nature and character of this horse comes across, she has that despite the earlier abuse. How wonderful you could give her a kind and loving home and a peaceful way to die. What luck, or a miracle, drew you both together to share such a strong relationship. You are well entitled to feel proud of your efforts, not just for this horse, but for many others. You must have a strong, loving heart yourself. Well done. Even on your own in this contest, your story is a WINNER! Well done. Warm regards - Lovinia xoxo

Thanks for the six stars; I appreciate them. Carmen deserves them whether I do or not. I was surprised to see that my story was the only one in the contest. I thought there had to be at least two. I rescued a lot of horses, dogs, and cats over the years but Carmen was a very special one.Thank you again for your thoughtful comments and the six stars.Thank you
