This poem, The Copesmate, with its couplet rhymes and pentameter set up, reminds me of my brother and me. We are copesmates in the sense that we are friends and, at times, not so much.

Sounds like a fairly common situation with siblings, Bill. I don't have one, so can't speak from personal experience. Cheers, Craig

Hrumph! Just when I thought maybe the world would try to come to agreement on what certain words meant like truth for example, we find words that can be neither nors or either ors.

I think this word, copesmate is a traditor and not to be given any quarter or centiday.

What form is this? It looks familiar but I can't quite place it. Nevertheless a most entertaining read, Craig.

Gloria

You were hoping for agreement on the meaning of "truth", Gloria? I do love your optimism. Boy - have I got some great Florida swampland to show you!

I believe the form is known as "limericus impossibilus". It was created when I attempted to write a limerick, and then realised there was no way it would fit into five lines of 3-3-2-2-3 iambic feet; so it became six lines of pentameter instead (though no doubt someone has done one with the same meter/rhyme before) :)

    Thanks for the great review!

    Craig

Hi Craig,

You've taught this reader something new ... not only the word "copesmate", but also 'contronyms'. English is such a funny language. A have a feeling that only in the English language would one find a word that also means its opposite.

Excellent poem to describe the meaning of "copesmate"! ~ ~ Connie

Thanks, Connie, for the kind words. English certainly is a strange language. Then again, we don't assign a sex to a window, or a desk, or other objects, so I guess maybe all languages have their quirks. :) Cheers, Craig

Now this is my second favorite of your posts. For me, it was particularly interesting because I love words. Of course, your presentation of the word 'copesmate' is unique and clever, as usual. Your notes, though, got more of my attention. Thank you for those contronyms. I never though about the words 'custom' and 'left' as having opposite meanings. How confusing. However does this happen in our language development? (purely rhetoric question here)

Well Craig, you wrote about another word I have never heard of. I hope to not be one of those to anyone. You used very good words to explain the meaning of
copesmate. I did not see any spag or errors. Blessings, Teri

Hi Craig. This is a well written poem using the new word (to me) 'copesmate.' To my mind, any word that includes the word 'mate' is some sort of liaison so the definition fits as the word has evolved. Your poem is laid out well with smooth rhyming and flow. Marilyn

A very well-written poem and a very interesting word that simply means partner or friend. We all need someone that will be on our side no matter what the circumstances may be.
