This brings back memories of those old Marx Bros films I watched as a kid. I'm sure if I watched them as an adult I would have found different things to laugh at. I do think you should have taken the bull by the horn and gone for the rhyme in amiss.....ha ha Great word,
cheers,
valda

I quite enjoy playing around with using a word that is a total mismatch, rhyme wise, and imagining people asking, "Why'd he do that?" Unfortunately, many people don't get the idea lol

    Most grateful, Valda :)

Now that is not the definition I would have picked for beaglepuss. In your second stanza, last line, did you mean "I'm just taking the mickey?" Because you keep alternating rhymes in the rest of the poem.

    Hi Carol

No, I didn't mean "taking the mickey", but the alternative phrase, with a last word which rhymes with "amiss", would have required a language warning ;-) I presume this must be an expression that isn't used in the States. Substituting non-rhyming words for naughty ones is a little joke which I use fairly frequently, and it always falls flat. I guess I should stop. Many thanks, Craig

Ha ha, you are so funny, I am not going to agree that you should stop. Now that I know what you mean I like it :))

Okay, how come you didn't rhyme amiss with mickey? Is this another one of those trick rhymes? LOL.

This is fantastic, Craig. I find wit is often misconstrued, which is really quite sad, and can also be very dangerous which is the very reason why we have to wear the beaglepusses to start with. You know, so no one will know who told the joke.

Excellent job with this.

I know, Gloria! I spent hours.... well, minutes... ok, seconds... trying to think of an expression that meant "making fun of" that would rhyme with amiss. "Taking the....." Oh well, sometimes, it just doesn't work :)

Much appreciate the fun comments, and the delightful stars.

The word sounds much worse than it is. Then I had to look up "take the mickey." So you taught me two funny things with this poem. I say let's thank God for those who can pull off a good pun.

Witty, well-written, and with a very pleasing rhyme scheme.. another great poem, Craig! I love the last line - "I'm well-equipped with silly puns, but short of common sense" - it has a wonderful balance/contrast, and left me with a grin on my face. Well done.

Thanks so much once again for the lovely review (which left a smile on MY face), and the terrific grading, Robbie. Both are very much appreciated.

I do like the Marx Brothers but only in small doses. Chico and Groucho's quick repartee give me a headache if exposed to it too long. I thought you may have used two words in this poem: 1) beaglepuss 2) taking the mickey.

I looked up "taking the mickey" and see that it means telling a joke, and I'm glad to know there is actually a name for the nose, glasses and mustache.

Good write. I was thinking of this just today:
"For not all folk can see the funny side of life, you know;
without a sense of humour sometimes mirth can seem amiss."

Not everyone "gets it." Sometimes I get a punch line a few minutes after it's tossed out there. Sometimes I never get it. On the other hand, I do have a sense of humor.

Thanks for the great review, Marilyn.

We have another saying here which means the same thing as "taking the mickey", but it's a tad more crude. In fact, the words are the same, except for the last one. It's changed for a different one, which rhymes with "amiss".

    Much appreciation,
    Craig

I don't understand why those glasses are called beagle puss. They don't make you look like dog or cat. Now if they had floppy ears on them, I'd understand.
Fun post, Lee.

Thank you, Lee? What happened to Debbie? Is this a shared account, or have I not known all this time Debbie is a pen-name?) Regardless, I'm most grateful -- Craig

If you only knew what I have been through in the past seven days, you would understand why I seem to have lost my mind. I am working on retrieving it.

Oh wait, did you call me "Lee"? If so, that's fine lol

I just didn't get why you signed with that name. I wasn't having a go, nor do I think you've got a kangaroo loose in the top paddock. I hope whatever has caused angst this past week is done with :)

No, it's not. That's why I am up at 3:00 a.m. It will get better though. Just a lot on me.

This is great! Its very funny and light and we need more poetry like that! I like that you spelled offence that way; it taught me a new word. I think it takes someone talented to write humor that cones across as humor. Well done!

Hi, Craig,

Great word for those silly masks. I'm sure they will be showing up again - its that time of year.

I don't think I like to join organizations either - not because they shouldn't have me, but because I don't want them. But that's just the self-preservation talking - I surely wouldn't fit in,
