Well this is pretty sound advice, Craig. I can imagine more than a few barns have gone up in flames due to a mishandled lantern.

I guess the cow lifted her front leg and gave the lantern a whack. I am assuming the cow perished from her owner's carelessness. Good job. Thank you for sharing

Oh my! I didn't know that was the cause. Well done verses with music, too. Although we can laugh about it now, it does make one pause to think the domino effect of one small act. (I'm sure the drought and all the wood and the unavailability of enough firefighters also helped. Poor cow.)

Thanks so much, Ulla. I remember learning the song as a child, and I'm a lot further from Chicago than you would have been in Europe. I guess it's the language, more than the distance, that governs what we learn as kids :) Cheers, Craig

So careless, that damn dame, old Mrs. O'Leary!
I woulda, I coulda, been burned -- I was bleary!
I went to my bed about midnight-- so weary!
And now I'm just sobbing-- my eyes are all teary!

That poor, faithful cow -- thru the night, it was lowing!
I honestly think that we all should be stowing
a pail and some water-- an old garden hose
inside of our bedrooms, for really -- who knows?

I've often heard this story. Can you imagine that a cow could start a fire that would be responsible for the deaths of so many and an incident that would be talked about for centuries?

Now, blunder-a-whack is one of those words I MUST find a use for in my writing.
