I liked the corny joke at the end of the piece. I once ate rabbit on the chow hall at a military base where I was stationed in SD in 1981. The rabbit tasted like chicken.

It does, somewhat. A bit "gamier". A few relatives want to come and take the little bunnies home for dinner. I told them "over my dead body", which, if I fall down one of the holes, might well be on the cards.

What a cute bunny. I like the play on words with burrowed and borrowed, I also like the uses of the synonyms warrens and burrows for the rabbit's home.

Congrats on placing third in the contest.

I thought this 5-7-5 was incredibly clever and since I'm not reviewing much, I don't mind giving it six stars, even though that means one star for every two words. ;") Rather expensive, but I can manage it. I liked this very much and wish it had received something a little higher than third place but at least it was recognized. Good work and I'm glad I was able to review it.

Hi, MM... Thank you for the wonderful, glowing rating. I was actually pleasantly surprised that this got a nod. I gave it far less chance than one I was told by many people "couldn't lose" in another category, that didn't even manage to limp in with a minor place. A far better effort in my opinion, but that's how it goes - swings and roundabouts :) I believe you've not been well, and so I am even more thankful than usual for your time and consideration. Heartfelt gratitude, Craig

Hi, Craig,

Uh oh. The mysterious holes that show up every year. However, it sounds like you have a bumper crop of rabbits this year. Ah, your neighbors shot all the foxes? So, they have upset the eco-system of the area.

Men really need to have a hunting season, too.

LOL Patty. I don't want to be hunted. Many thanks, Craig

You did notice, I said 'Man Hunting Season.' I made sure I wouldn't be targeted,

Hello Craig,
Humor well-delivered. A well-crafted 5/7/5 offering that possesses environmental significance.
We had an explosion of a rabbit population following a horrific storm in August 2015 that ravaged parts of northern Michigan. For the remainder of that summer, rabbits devoured everything edible in our yard. And then, the next summer, they moved on. Apparently, the smorgasbord served by our neighbor was more in line with their tastes!

Thank you for sharing!

Haha, well, I hope you thanked your neighbour, Diane. I wish our lot would move on, before our property becomes one giant sinkhole. Cheers, Craig

What a wonderful witty and visual entry here, Craig -- you can even at 'picks at the emotions' to that listing because of the foxes prowling after our little bunnies. But you're right about mankind being brilliant when it comes to 'meddling' in natural processes and systems. :) ;) Thanx for sharing and good luck in the contest! :) Yvette

This 5-7-5, Swiss Cheese, has the right set up and points out the problem when natural predators are removed from the scene. Liked the play on words as well.

Thanks once again, Bill. We should just learn to butt out, I feel. Cheers, Craig

A very welll-written 5-7-5 poem. When man interferes with nature it is always a big mess, the foxes may steal the chickens because man chased away their prey, now the rabbits take over again because there is no foxes to catch them.

Yep, we need to learn to stop interfering. Thanks, Sandra.

Craig, I couldn't agree with you more, and I feel your anger. I would be angry as well.
How stupid is that to upset the balance of nature. But man does it all the time and only wakes up when it's too late. I like your poem. Now I truly understand what it means and says. Good luck in the contest. All the best. Ulla:))

I don't suppose you took that picture in your front yard. That would have been interesting. A photo of the residents on your property.
We have chipmunk holes. Masses of them. Swiss cheese is a very appropriate description. The chipmunks are more daring than rabbits, probably. They get right up on foundations and do damage. Chip and Dale they are not. You protect your Thumpers though. They are a blessing. So are the chipmunks actually.

No, that's just an internet pic, Debbie. But I could point a camera out the window right now and "shoot" about 20 of them. I'd never harm a bunny though, they are cute. So are foxes, I'd never hurt one of them either. They all just want the same things we do, when we are thinking clearly (which, for humans, is not often). Cheers, Craig
