The story definitely does appear in the novel The Thornbirds. According to a Wikipedia article, there's no known occurrence of it before then, so it may well be Colleen McCullough made it up.
You've constructed a well thought-out and moving free verse based around this tale. Good job, Dawn :)

What an amazing story with so much sadness yet ultimately triumph for the
bird as it sacrifices life to share its voice with all.
The presentation and poem itself are surely to be treasured for future generations.

Hi Dawn. This is a lovely poem, but melancholy. The thorn bird, I believe, is a mythical bird. Humans can relate to the concept of throwing ourselves onto thorns and singing a beautiful song, probably because it seems like a noble gesture. God knows we torture ourselves in so many ways. Hi Dawn, it's a compelling story taking place in Australia. I have the book and I've read it several times. And I believe the story is exactly based on the bird. The priest falls in love. He's stung and have to die as he's sinned beyond forgiveness. I loved your poem. All best. Ulla:)))

I'd never heard the legend of the thorn bird (I'm also one of the few that never read that book or watched the min-series). Thanks for introducing me to it - it's a wonderful story and great material for a poem.
I love that your poem has a moral. After explaining the thornbird's story in your poem, you contrast that with our opportunity to sing our song not once, but over and over again.
The sparing use of rhyme gives this a "freedom" that highlights the message. Love it!
