Ah, Craig this does make a lot of sense to me. Donar means to give in Spanish and of course derives from Latin. So I've mapped the word and its origin. I love languages. Great limerick you've composed around the word. All the best. Ulla:)))

Enjoyed all your limerick's rhyme. It's a coup to be able to rhyme doniferous with coniferous and vociferous comes as a reasonable near rhyme. It's definitely all about presents for the children.

Hi Helen,

I'd call vociferous a perfect rhyme too, as it's normally only the terminal sound we are concerned with, and that's identical in all three. In fact, the last three syllables are the same in each. Not defending, just explaining my understanding of what a "perfect" vs "near" or "slant" rhyme is.

An example of a near rhyme to my ears would be moon (which rhymes with swoon), and tune, which I pronounce "tewn". However this is probably a perfect rhyme to American ears, I think, as to me, it seems that they pronounce moon and tune with identical vowel sounds. Either that, or the distinction is too subtle for my ears ;-)

I've gotta give you six stars for this one, Craig. I love the word 'doniferous'. That must be how the word 'donation' came about. "Dashes one" ... luv this. It ties in with the theme of reindeer (namely Dasher) and Santa's sleigh on Christmas Eve.

You're absolutely right that it has the same root as donation -- the Latin word donum, which means a gift.
