The hat is a wonderful symbol of my parent's generation - seems that men and women often wore hats in a way that we just don't now - they communicated grace and style. Your poem makes me think of a dignified "church lady" from long ago, and the ending of your poem - still using the hat (or its absence) as a metaphor, speaks volumes about what we lost with that generation's passing.

I wish I had a six to amply reward this.

Hello Amada
I thought retaliation to be the best form of thanks...
This is a great piece of writing. It is insightful and melancholy in its own way: a sense of time passing, or missed opportunities, or forgotten dreams. It is also an excellent example of taking something in miniature and showing its value, a very difficult technique but one which illustrates to the reader the potential of everything, of small things, to have meaning: which just needs to be unlocked.
A simple piece which hides how difficult it is to write simply.
I wish you well with your writing.
Cheers
phill

Hello Amada
Yes, indeed as you said in your authors note, you are, a real good collector of words. And you know how to express your self using your special gift from God.
Amada, I read that you are open for suggestions
there is this line in your prose, I wonder if you might want to change--
wide, sturdy, ripe-earth tone. Her long, blue dress floated (in her) my suggestions say,----
'Her long, blue dress floated with the breeze'
or
" Her long, blue dress floated with ease and grace"
Thank you for sharing your gift of words with us fanstortians
Gert

Congrats on your prize! Powerful and poignant. Lovely elegant imagery--visual, auditory, and olfactory--ripe-earth tone, music, and magnolia. Cheers. LIZ

What a perfect little glimpse of a life. I enjoyed this so very much - in describing walking in grace it was written so gracefully itself. Our clothes often have an impact on how we present ourselves, and how others perceive us to be. Here, the hat is representative of life itself.
It was only a little spooky that I have an identical hat to the one in the picture!

What a lovely memory and lovely tribute to this lady you tried to emulate in your youth. How sad that for whatever reason, she stopped wearing her hat. Maybe it happens in different ways when women stop coloring their hair or wearing make-up. Hats off to you for a very nice story.

A very well-written true story flash of a lady with a hat that made an impression on you when you were still young and you tried to become as elegant and mysterious as she appears but the years blown away her hat and her mysterious appearance away.

I can relate to your posting a lot with a deep sigh. This is because, truthfully, I have never been a graceful swan...I'm much more like a tromping buffalo. But that's okay. It helps me, all the more, to appreciate beautiful works that create a music of their own. Just like this.

It's unpredictable who or what will capture our young imaginations and give us something to strive for. Your lady of hat and grace made such an impression upon you. Nicely written. Calculated word choices. Well done.

Best of luck.

Peace, Lee

The story has excellent imagery and emotion.

"First, I heard her steps, musical, magnetic. Then I saw her enormous hat-- " I would suggest a semicolon after 'steps', but grammar is not a strong point of mine.
" as if one day the wind swept her hat, and took her soul as well."
I think it would have taken her youth, not her soul.
I liked the wording, the rhythm, and the strong feelings in this story.

I changed the comma to the semicolon after her steps. Thank you for your great suggestion.
