They are such wonderful friends in the back (and front!) yard, are they not? ;) A lovely reflective free verse, JL, that can't help but make the reader smile! ;) Thanx for sharing! ;) Yvette

Yvette, one can never tire of these wonderful guests.

This is so beautiful. You took a specific topic, cardinals, and, as if looking through binoculars, focus on a specific pair of them. This is good technique because it makes me see into their personal lives and be more interested than if you stated facts. You describe the change in weather very artistically also, which makes this a well-rounded poem....beautiful pictures, words, imagery, story-telling.
Thank you for this memorable poem!

Your writing gives the reader an image of these two visitors coming and leaving each day as well as the changing seasons that now make them blend in more with the autumn colors.
Well written and enjoyed your visitors.

Hi JLR,
Cardinals will hang around all through the winter. They stand out like a sore thumb against a heavy snowfall. But I like your thoughts on the October cardinals, how they can disappear among red & orange leaves,
"blending more fully
in the rusting of leaves"
Males are so royal in appearance, while the females have more brown and orange feathers, and sparrow breasts. Beautiful birds. Add a couple of blue jays, and you've got the French hierarchy of the 1700's.
I enjoyed your free verse Autumn poem. Thanks for sharing.
Cheers,
Kimbob

kimbob, the Cardinal is our state bird, while I love all the birds that flock to our feeder...it the Cardinals that impress me most. Have a delightful Sunday!

This poem, He and She, captures some brief time observing these scarlet sentinels which make a home while we watch and represent life in the world.

Thanks for dropping in Bill,

This is lovely. I used to have the same experience outside my kitchen window. I loved doing dishes when they would come to visit my lilac tree. I feel badly for those who have never seen a cardinal. They can only experience this beauty vicariously. Thank you.

Hello, my friend,
Another fine entry for the picture this challenge. I read a bunch... it's interesting that they are all different but somehow the same. Nice imagery.

Gypsy, yes it is amazing that the conclusions run so parallel
Comment from Sandra du Plessis
A very well-written poem and an excellent interpretation of the picture of the picture this club and the pair of cardinals seem quite comfortable to be close by humans.

I like how you call the cardinals "he and she". They are so beautiful and your vivid use of words captures their essence and beauty. Excellent poetic form and use to words to paint a picture of nature. I enjoy watching cardinals.

Dear JLR, of all the entries for this topic on the Cardinals, I think I like this one best because you mention both of them. There Are Two of them in the picture is there not?
Both are responsible fo making sure the next generation of their kind, are there to add color to our back yards next summer. Lovely and well crafted poem.
