Strange Creatures

"How are the specimens from the blue planet," Globemaster queried.

"We did the best we could to replicate their environment, but I'm afraid it isn't as large or as scenic as their native habitat. Hopefully they will adjust. At least they are not as lethargic as they were before we adjusted the oxygen levels," Terramaster replied.

"Funny looking aren't they?" Globemaster observed. "Interesting that they come in different colors."

Terramaster nodded. "Yes, we are just starting to learn more about them. They are sentient beings, but obviously considerably less evolved."

"Is there time for another trip to gather more specimens?"

"Unfortunately, that is not possible. We are light years away and the asteroid will strike before we can get there.

"What a pity. Is there no way to avert mass extinction?"

"No, it is far too late," Terramaster replied, "But we brought back an equal number of males and females, so hopefully they will reproduce. They are very entertaining to watch, are they not?"

"Definitely," replied Globemaster, moving closer to the one-way observation window. "What are those males in the corner doing?"

"They are throwing a spherical object called a baseball. In their culture, it is part of a ritual that generates great fervor when performed before large gatherings. Once the sphere is thrown, one of them tries to smite it with a large weapon-like implement called a bat."

"What is the purpose of such a ritual?"

"We're not sure. Some of our colleagues think it may be religious, but given their warlike nature, I believe it is preparation for battle."

"On what do you base that hypothesis?"

"For one thing, on occasion, individuals have been observed smiting one another with similar implements. Also, on the last trip to the planet, we beamed down to view one such ritual and ascertained that there was great agitation among the throng of observers. The frenzy was accompanied by loud cries of 'kill the umpire.' I think perhaps Umpire is the name of a rival tribe."

Globemaster looked perplexed as he stroked his antennae. "Such strange creatures! Are you sure it is wise to let them reproduce?"
