Sunset Contest Winner

You lit up my life like golden rays,
brought me gentle warmth and love,
like the light and comfort of sunshine
from day's gentle promise at dawn
to its quiet and weary end.

You offered wordless wisdom to live by ...
taught me new meanings of words
like "unconditional" and "love",
joining them so that the whole
was so much bigger than I ever knew.

I basked in the sunshine of your love,
and I think, yes, I know you felt the same …
I met you in the sunset of your life
old, tired, but so gentle and kind ....
we were connected spirits, thoughts linked.

Shoulders touching, breathless with awe,
we watched sunsets, painted day after day,
the sky deftly brushed with splendour ...
precious gold, blood red, soft pink and royal purple
slashes and strokes of mastery and artistry….

Until that day ... you were leaning into my arms,
and as the sun softly slipped away,
weary from life, you too quietly slipped away.
breathless, but not from awe ...
the sunshine gone from my life.

Your sunset.
Night fell.
