Tarnished crown

by royowen

If your crown be dull and tarnished
silken robes be turned to rags.
Would you still sing odes to glory
if you're clothed in hessian bags?

If your fortress strong and mighty
then be crushed and turned to dust.
Would you praise the king of Heaven
still be filled with faith and trust?

If your wealth was lost or stolen
then your path divided be.
Would you still with faith declaring
Jesus' love is still the key.

If your friend would turn, betray you,
would you with your days still cope?
Could you face uncertain pastures
broken heart still filled with hope?

If you lost your wife and children
lift your eyes as evening fell.
You cried out "God don't forsake me --
yes, with my soul all is well.

The source of the song, It is well with my soul
Horatio G Spofford was a successful lawyer was a successful businessman in Chicago with a lovely family, a Wife, Anna, and five children. However, they were not strangers to tears and tragedy. Their young son died of Pneumonia in 1871, and in that same year, lost much of their business in the great Chicago fire.
On a trip to Europe the ship Mrs. Spafford and her four daughters were sailing in, sunk, and only Mrs. Spafford survived. When sailing over that same spot where the girls drowned, Mr. Spafford wrote these words.

When peace like a river attendeth my soul,
When sorrows like sea billows roll,
Whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to know,
it is well, it is well with my soul.

Refrain; It is well (it is well)
with my soul, (with my soul)
it is well, it is well with my my soul.

I do not know how they did that, but obviously only God can get one through that!

Hebrews 13:5 I will never leave you, nor forsake you
