The Sunflower Farm Story

by Wendy G

"Ellie-Jane, would you like to have a day out somewhere special with me?

It will be our last activity together for the summer holidays. You're back at school soon!

And guess what, Nanny will write a family story about our day out for a special contest! You'll be in my story!"

"Nanny, yes please! May we also take ... "

"No, no, don't say any more. Nanny's contest has rules, and we must be careful to follow all the rules. There are some things we must not mention …."

"Sorry Nanny. It's just that he's part of the family and would love a day out too! I won't say anything more! May we please go to the z-- "

"Ellie-Jane, stop! Sorry, dear, we can't go there either … just in case we make a mistake for the rules of Nanny's story. I wonder if you would like to go to a flower farm? It is a lovely drive, and we may pick some flowers – they have lots of sunflowers! Sunflowers are gigantic, and they actually turn to follow the sun. I think you would like that!"

"I'll ask M--. "

"Hush! I'll check with them. Say no more. I have to think about the rules!"

That Saturday, Nanny and Ellie-Jane drove into the country, past all the farms and up into the nearby hills. They enjoyed looking at a great variety of special things not normally seen in the city. The flower farm was quite enormous. They wandered along rows of dahlias and other flowers until they came to the sunflowers. Some were taller than Ellie-Jane!

"Let's take some photos of you standing next to those beautiful sunflowers. Wonderful!  Just stand back a little, right next to them .…"

However, Ellie-Jane noticed something. She jumped away.

"What's wrong?" Nanny asked anxiously.

"Look there, Nanny! I might get stung! Look on all the flowers! There are b---"

"Hush Dear, don't say that word. Some people keep them at home, and it might break the rules for Nanny's story .…"

"Nanny, there seem to be a lot of rules for your story …! Do you think you will win?"

"Well, none of us can see what lies ahead, and I can't even think about the future for my story. That's not allowed either …. But I don't expect so. Some people write about the most amazing things. They are unbelievable!"

Read all rules:
This story needed to involve parents OR grandparents in lieu of parents, so parents were not mentioned. It needed to not be about pets. Just to make sure, there was no mention of any animals on farms, or bees either. Time travel was not allowed, so the future possibilities were not spoken of.
Because of the bees, she was unwilling to stand near the biggest sunflowers for the photo.
Note: the story is fiction.
