A disastrous dinner date. (290 words)

Crunch Time

by LisaMay

The dinner date at the classy Italian restaurant was going from bad to worse. Alison kept smiling but the guy was horrendous… making lewd suggestions even though they had only just met on this blind date, claiming things she knew to be lies, and his table manners were terrible!

Alison was enjoying the food, but there came a time when she could smile no more. She bit on a grissini bread stick and felt her upper denture break. What to do? What to do? Should she just stop eating?

The broken ends of the denture began digging painfully into her gums. She spat out both parts into her hand, displaying even worse table manners than her date. His eyes widened. He abruptly put his fork down and left the table. He didn’t return.

Alison was relieved. She kept eating the delicious pasta, slurping it up and gumming it without chewing. Later, when paying the bill, she showed the cashier her broken denture and, out of consideration for others, gently suggested the restaurant patrons should be warned about the texture of the grissini.

The cashier was horrified that damage had been done, then she reversed the payment. Alison was amazed to be given a free dinner. An otherwise disastrous evening had ended on an unexpected note of generosity.

It would never cross Alison's mind to be deceitful. However, she was a writer and enjoyed 'a twist in the tale'. She chuckled to herself when she realised the situation could provide an imaginative and slightly subversive ending to a contest entry...

And the moral of the story is ‘always carry a set of broken dentures — you never know when you might want to repel someone’s advances or get a dinner discount’.

Write A Modern Fable writing prompt entry
Writing Prompt
Write a short fable-like story where the last sentence starts with: "And the moral of the story is". This can be on any subject, true or fictional, and can be in any voice, as long as the moral is stated in the last line. A new twist on an old fable is also allowed. Be creative and have fun! Maximum word count: 300

Author note:
I am not really suggesting this should be a strategy for getting a free meal. It is a rather immoral 'moral'. I took creative license for the prompt.
