Chester, the hunter's mate and couch potato.

The Brave-hearted Softie

by LisaMay

The years have passed, but there’s never a debate
that Chester, the smooch, was in a class first-rate.
Loyal and true, he was my man’s best friend,
but he loved me too. Or did he condescend?

He sprawled on the couch whenever he could,
but then he looked guilty; I’m sure he understood,
that “No”, meant “No!”. How could that be unclear?
He had a way around me, grinning ear-to-ear.

A brave-hearted dog, he was a duck-hunter’s joy —
he retrieved those ducks then got a pat, “Good boy!”
My man’s dog, Chester, was brainy and strong,
but when it came to farts, oh, what a horrid pong!

Definition of 'pong':
A stench; an unpleasant smell. (British informal)

Chester was a Chesapeake Bay retriever. His farts were legendary, but the worst smell I have ever had assault my nostrils occurred when he rubbed affectionately against me after he'd rolled in a dead seal on the beach. Then he grinned at me, knowingly.
