Exceptional
This work has reached the exceptional level
The rituals of a senior couple

Just The Way It Is

The doctor told them both on separate visits
to cut out the fats,
minimize the sugar
and stay active,
Each evening, they eat
baked or boiled meats, mainly chicken
served with some vegetable
steamed in watery juices.
Afterwards, a cookie and a small scoop of vanilla ice cream
or thinly sliced Angel Food cake satisfy their sweet tooth.
After supper they retire to the front porch
and sit in wicker rocking chairs.
Faceless drivers’ car lights
flash quick hellos and good-byes
as the cars round the bend
where their mailbox stands.

She always comments on the weather.
“Warm out tonight.
Cooler than usual,
or thought it was gonna rain,” 
He answers, “Un huh, sure nuff.”
Tight-lipped ease see-saws rhythmically between them.
If he clears his throat, she stares briefly at him
not really expecting him to say anything.
Comfort cloaks the absence of conversation.
eliminating the need
to voice the when, what, how and why
of the Jell-O years of their twosome.
Their solitude is only broken
when she pats his hand,
and he responds, “Yeah, it’s time to go in.”
She enters first as usual,
because he always locks the doors to their hom
e.
