In the fourth major flood disaster

Rescue

by Wendy G

Boat rescue today
Two children, me, two small bags
That's all we have now …

All we had is lost …
You're giving food and help?
We're glad and grateful!

Pillows and towels?
Keep some for others – we'll share …
Thank you for your care!

How do they all cope?
Life has been so hard for them
All I give is hope.

I can go back home
But what will become of them?
They must start again

Four disasters now
All veneer is stripped away
Character revealed

I stand now amazed
Awed by their courage and strength ...
Helping? Blesses me!

I spent yesterday at the Evacuation Centre, helping victims of our fourth record-breaking catastrophic flood in eighteen months. So many stories. Many were rescued from temporary accommodation, having lost their homes earlier this year. These are not people looking for handouts or government help. Many also lost their jobs when businesses were lost in the last floods. I am awed by their courage and resilience.
This is a small tribute in a suite of 5-7-5, firstly from their perspective, then from mine, about their courage and unselfishness.
