Prologue/ Blessed Brother /part 6

Everett grinned and shook his head. "And how're you going to finish me off, Owen? You wouldn't be stupid enough to leave me alive after you've killed Remi, or maybe you are that stupid! Now that you mention it, you don't look that smart at all, Owen."

Owen's smug expression changed. Watch your mouth, Father!"

"I'd like to know one more thing, Owen. What does the devil do with a religious artifact? Of course, you can't sell it, and God won't allow you to use it for evil, but how is the devil to know such a fact? I guess you are as stupid as you look."

Owen's lips pursed, and his eyes widened. "Shut up! Do you hear me, shut up, or I'll push my plans up and kill you both where you stand."
Remi turned his gaze to Owen. "You son-of-a-bitch."
"Oh, fuck you, Remi. What were you expecting; a long-lost nurturing uncle. Let me guess, is this your first time being betrayed? Not to worry, it gets easier to handle as life goes on. You're shaking like a leaf, Remi. I'd have to take a guess and say you've never killed a man before?"
"No, but I've killed some maggots in my day."
"This sounds like the gunfight at the O.K Corral, but that wasn't as dragged out!" Owen broke out in guffawing laughter. "You should monitor his TV watching a bit closer, Father."
Remi's face reddened, and his cheeks deflated with a puff of air. "You're a cruel son-of-a-bitch, Owen." He raised the .45cal and placed his trembling finger on the trigger.
Everett jumped to his feet. "Remi, NO."

Blessed Brother/part 7
The devil is dared.

The overhead hall light clicked and flickered intermittently as skinny bolts of electrical current fingered the inside of the glass cover. Finally, a brilliant white light burst from the fixture, sending the gun Remi held careening against the wall at the end of the hallway. Remi went to his knees and curled into a ball on the floor while Everett moved in Remi's direction and shielded him with his body. As violently as the light came, it receded toward the fixture and disappeared with a blinding peripheral flash.

Everett looked up at Owen, and curiously he hadn't flinched. Instead, his eyes fixed on the dawned light of the hallway. Everett followed Owen's stare to a greyly-lit figure a few feet away. "Sweet Jesus -" Everett's eyes widened, and a quiver crept across his scalp as he signed the cross. "Claudia?"

"Mom." Remi moved to get up, and Everett held him back with his forearm.

"It's okay, Everett, let him come."

Everett never took his eyes off Claudia as he slowly dropped his arm to release Remi. Everett heard the solid thud of their embrace as Remi threw his arms around her waist.

"My God, Claudia, I don't understand - I…"

"I told you, Uncle Everett - I told you this was possible."

"Remi, I…" Owen interrupted.

"That was quite an entrance, Claudia, but then again, you always were a bit dramatic, weren't you? So why don't you tell the boy you're not here to stay, Sister Claudia."

Remi looked up at her. "Mom?" She kissed Remi's forehead. "I'll be with you always, Remi."

"Oh, I'm so touched, Claudia. You should be, too, Remi, such sentiment coming from an Angelic whore. So tell us, Claudia, how did you coax your way into heaven?" Owen released a deep scornful laugh. "How many times did you have to sleep with your so-called God before he unlocked the golden gates to let you in?"

Everett swung his gaze in Owen's direction. "That's enough. Remi doesn't need to know…"

"Know what, Father? That his mother was a dirty whore on earth."

Remi spoke up. "That's not true."

From behind, Claudia put an arm across Remi's chest. "Remi, be careful he's not who he appears to be."

"Yes, Remi, would you like to see who you've been talking with all these months?" Owen raised his arms and let out a deep, guttural growl. His body trembled, and his head flittered violently as his fixed brown eyes dissolved to an icy glacial hue. An unearthly grin manifested over his face, and ivory horns and claws grew with the gelatinous sounds of splitting and popping flesh.

"Sweet Jesus." Everett cowered backward on his hands and heels and pulled Remi beside him to the carpeted floor.

Claudia stepped forward; a placid white aura surrounded her. "You don't belong here. Everett and my son should have nothing to do with your quest to demonize the Medallion nor my fight with you to protect it. You've already taken Everett's father's soul. Alessandro was a good man simply trying to save his infant son. But, instead, he fell into your trickery."

Everett stared into the creature's eyes. "You have my father's soul?" The creature's grotesque upper chest heaved as its cold breath curled into the ambient air of the parsonage.

"Your father was an easy target." Its voice slowed, and guttural cackles eased out between its paused words. "He wanted you to live, and in exchange for your life, he gave me his. It seems he was a bigger fool than you are, Father."

"Then, why didn't you take the Medallion when you took my father's soul?"

Claudia moved Remi behind her, and she spoke with urgency. "He's afraid of the Medallion, Everett. He has no idea what it will do to him if he possesses it. So his quest for it will be never-ending."

The creature's head cocked back, and an unearthly growl accompanied the deafening slams and bangs throughout the parsonage.

Remi covered his ears. "Stop this! Leave us alone," he yelled. Remi charged the creature, and Everett lunged for Remi, but it was too late. The beast swung his arm, Remi was tossed over the railing, and the beast levitated him in mid-air. Remi's arms and legs flailed with trepidation as his eyes descended the forty-foot drop to the tiled floor below.

A snarl shook the walls as Claudia's arm extended in the beast's direction, emitting a scorching white beam. The beast pulled its arm in to shield its face, and Remi's body tumbled a few feet before Claudia levitated him back over the railing. "I have you, son." Remi continued to flail until his feet touched the floor.

Claudia knew things were going to get worse and pleaded for Everett to hand her the Medallion. But instead, Everett bent down and placed it on the floor. The creature groaned and took a step back, and Everett felt the beast's frigid breath graze the back of his neck.

Claudia moved closer and touched the top of Everett's shoulder. "Everett, do you know what you're doing?"

He looked at her for a few seconds and shook his head. Everett looked down at the Medallion as he spoke. "This Medallion has touched the hand of God. It has healed the blind and cleansed the leper's skin. Yet, it is not new to the degradations of evil."

As he knelt before the beast, he cupped the Medallion in his palms. "Perhaps your fear of the Medallion is uncalled-for." Everett looked into the eyes of the beast and raised the Medallion closer.
"Clearly, you can stand before it and remain unharmed." Everett returned it to the floor and backed away.

The beast stood erect as it moved its claws above the religious artifact. Then, the Medallion levitated slowly toward the beast's open palms.

This is an ending, but I didn't say it was THE ending. I have started too many writing projects, and due to a membrane blip below the pia mater of the muse section of my brain, I will have to drop the ball on this story right here for now. BLIP BLIP- BLIP, CRASH. Love you all. Thanks for reading my crazy stuff.
