Sunset on the beach

Thirtieth Wedding Anniversary

by Theodore McDowell

Sails traverse water,
pastel colors dabbed
with quick impressionistic
brushstrokes against
a cloudless horizon.

Swells rise and fall,
ocean’s mighty chest
heaves and sighs,
remembering birth
from its ancient womb.

Lying on towels,
sunlight burns
between us.
Our eyes meet,
setting aflame
pure white sand.

We stroll the beach,
tracing the steps
of our youth.
Wavelets play
at our feet,
prodding us
to dance
to the rhythm
of our children.

We hold hands
as we pass the pier,
stride toward
sunset woven
with colors
of our memories.
