I was attracted to the only thing I knew
The way it was
by Joanne Gill-Maddick
I married out of high school and gave birth to a baby boy. I had low self-esteem and struggled to fit in. I was attracted to the only thing I knew, negativity.
I loved my parents dearly and they have done the best they could with the knowledge they had. They grew up in an era where being pregnant so young was shunned upon and was associated with shame.
So when I had my first child all those negative feelings were instilled in me.
I was told it’s not much odds what I wear when I’m like that. I was ashamed. I had a bad marriage with mental cruelty. After 22 years I got the courage to walk away, just before two more failed attempts at relationships. I since met a wonderful man and remarried. Today, I have two wonderful sons and four grandchildren and looking forward to what the future holds.
