my Life

by jake cosmos aller

I grew up in Berkeley, California, in the fabled 60s and 70s, graduating from Berkeley High School in 1974. Berkeley in those days was a zany, crazy, diverse place and still is. My high school was the most multicultural city in the country, with over 250 languages spoken there. It was 40 percent black, 40 percent white, 10 percent Asian, and 10 percent Hispanic. Yet we all got along. My father was a local politician, and I grew up in a political family. My father had been Undersecretary of Labor for Johnson, so I spent some of my childhood in DC. I drifted through college, had a lost year or two, joined the Peace Corps in Korea, taught ESL for a while, met and married the lady of my dreams, traveled the world, joined the US State Department, serving almost 30 years before retiring as an ex-pat in South Korea.
