Illness nauseatingly disrupts my temperature regulation

Anything But Fire

by Megan Sue Bates

Always afraid of fire, "Must've been born that way"

Never had a fiery mishap, or so my parents claim

Campfires, floating lighters, candles - I'll keep my distance

Have yet to meet a stick long enough, to roast a marshmallow sans panic

Once you feel the warmth snake in, it starts the gears in motion

Such a fiesty wild card, what's to stop it from burning hotter?

Never give my imagination the wheel, for it only knows two ways:

All or nothing; no in between, like wild fire

Barely ashes or forest aflame, decimated or out of control

I'll never comprehend the intrigue

Now the burning comes in waves, gradually consuming me

Till I'm only a shrunken shriveled shiver

I cannot escape my greatest fears, but they cannot steal my power

I'll be the one holding the reins, when I set the world on fire

Phobias writing prompt entry
Writing Prompt
Write a 10-15 line free verse poem about a phobia you may have. We all have something that very much frightens us. No rhyming patterns.

Sometimes life feels overwhelming, with so many things beyond our control. I find peace and balance of redirecting the negative energies as positive light. I hope to spark that fire in others.
