The Widow

She said little as the mourners murmured their words of sympathy.

Hushed snatches of conversation reached her ears.

"She didn't cry at the funeral."

"She's still in shock."

"We're all still in shock."

"...police have any leads?"

"A hit-and-run..."

"...no leads..."

"...can't find anyone who saw anything..."

Hours later, the widow locked the door behind the last mourner. Turning away, she headed to the upstairs bathroom. Removing her make-up, she revealed a large yellowing bruise around her left eye. As she looked at her haggard reflection in the mirror, she let out a deep sigh. Free at last, she thought.
