The Thanksgiving Meatless Loaf

by jessizero

For about a year during college, I was a vegetarian.  I decided to bring a vegetarian meatloaf (meatless loaf) to my family’s Thanksgiving gathering.  Since I had never made this before, I opted to have a trial run a few weeks before the holiday.

I bought soy crumbles to use in place of ground beef.  For some reason, I settled on using egg beaters instead of regular eggs.  After that, I bought a can of “meatloaf fixings” and mashed everything together in a bowl and baked it.

The thing that came out of the oven was not thoroughly cooked and smelled awful.  I didn’t know what part of the improvised recipe had failed.

About that time, my Aunt Sara called my apartment and asked if I wanted to go out to eat.  I told her that I had just finished cooking.  She asked me what I had cooked, and I shamefully confessed about my culinary failure.  She told me to throw it out and come eat with her.

I never tried to make meatless loaf again, and I just brought soda to my family gathering.

I don't have a picture of this, as it was in a day before camera phones. Trust me, though - the meatless loaf was a disaster.
