He is the reason for the season

tanka prose (deck the hall)

by Janet Foor

I marvel at every ornament as each one has a story to tell. The lovely filigree heart with shiny stones that I bought in Paris and the blue felt "Bobby" from England for my husband Bob. There's a sweet clogging lass reminding me of my Irish heritage but all of them are special to me.

I lovingly suspend the crocheted snowflakes that my mother made, and the snowmen and candy canes created by my children when they were young. I laugh as I see the Disney characters beside the golden "pineapple" adornment sent from a friend in Charleston. Tears of joy fall as I reminisce over Rudolf that always hung on my childhood tree. Then tears of sadness as I find a place for the iridescent baubles that were a gift long ago from my now estranged son.

So many memories fill me as I trim the giant blue spruce. Christmas is coming! Excitement fills the air.

a star
shines in the East
a baby is born
I ponder God's grace
in awe and wonder

Decorating our Christmas tree is a like a trip down memory lane. Each ornament represents a story of a person or place that is precious to me. So many of the decorations were made by my mother or my children and some we made together. While each one tells a story, they ultimately remind me of why we made them and why year after year we deck the hall.

Isaiah 9:6. For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
